HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1895 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/09/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/10/97 Daily Status Report as of 161/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6887 (A Photometric Search for Faint Companions to Nearby Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a photometric search observations of the nearby star HD61421A in order to look for possible companions. The technique involves use of the Planetary Camera with wide band pass filters to photometrically measure for the presence of resolved dark companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7700 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal) The Space Telescope Imaging Telescope (CCD) was used to obtain slitless spectroscopy with the G750L grism to search for emission line galaxies at intermediate to high redshift. Field galaxy surveys have shown that at high redshift most galaxies have strong emission lines, and are compact and blue. This suggests that star formation rates were higher than at present, and that AGNs may have been more frequent. The low background and high resolution of HST separates these objects from the background. The proposal completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal Monitor-Visual Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat fields which will be executed twice per month. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7600 (STIS CCD Performance Monitor) The Space Telescope Imaging Telescope (CCD) was used to measure the baseline performance and commandability of the CCD subsystem. Only primary amplifier D is used. Bias, dark, and flat field exposures are taken in order to measure read noise, dark current, CTE, and gain. Numerous bias frames are also taken to permit construction of "superbias" frames in which the effects of read noise have been rendered negligible. Dark exposures are made outside the SAA. The observations completed normally, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7608 (NICMOS Focus Monitoring) The Near Infrared Cameras (Cameras One, Two, and Three) were used to determine and monitor the optimal focus and tilt settings for all three NICMOS cameras. This proposal is built to run NIC/1/2/3 sweeps on a 2-week basis. The obserservations completed without incident with no reported anomalies. 1.6 Completed Six Sets of WF/PC-2 6904 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of dark calibration images as part of a standard calibration within Cycle 6. This calibration procedure is performed once per week as part of an on going CCD calibration to be used to monitor and characterize hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 7553 (Pure Parallel Archive Survey II) WF/PC-2 parallel observations were obtained in the ultraviolet in search for interesting objects. This program is designed to find extragalactic sources with near ultraviolet excesses (3000 A0) outside the galactic plane and far ultraviolet sources (1600 A0) in the galactic plane. The procedure was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5967 (Imaging Clusters of Galaxies at Z>1) The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep images of the galaxy cluster 3C210 which is know to have a redshift of Z>1 to study its galaxies' morphology. The observations were completed as planned and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed Four Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7705 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 3/8) The purpose of this proposal is to obtain group 3 of the on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, before the start of Cycle 7. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.10 Completed Nine Sets of STIS/CCD 7675 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used in the parallel mode to obtain slitless spectroscopy with the G750L grism to search for emission line galaxies at intermediate to high redshift. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed Four Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7703 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 1/8) The purpose of this proposal is to obtain group 1 of the on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, before the start of Cycle 7. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.12 Completed Five Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7706 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 4/8) The purpose of this proposal is to obtain group 4 of the on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, before the start of Cycle 7. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 7588 (Measuring Q0 With Type IA Supernovae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of supernova SN1997A4 in order to measure the Q0 parameter. This is to produce a precise Hubble diagram which can be used to measure the cosmic deceleration and global curvature of the universe. HST can make an essential contribution by providing photometry with substantially higher precision and better temporal coverage than can be obtained from the ground. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed Three Sets of STIS/MA1 7093 (Dark Measurement for MAMA Band 1, and Band 2) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make dark calibration observations of the MAMA Band 1 and Band 2. These observations are to be used to establish that the detectors are performing nominally, that no internal movement of the MCP has taken place, and to establish the dark level in orbit for a given operating temperature. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed Four Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7709 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 7/8) The purpose of this proposal is to obtain group 7 of the on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, before the start of Cycle 7. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 6699 (The Globular Cluster System of the Dwarf Elliptical System Galaxies NGC-185 and NGC 205) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the globular cluster system around the nucleus of dwarf galaxy NGC-185. The propose is to carry out a general reconnaissance of the properties of the globular clusters. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.17 Completed Three Sets of NIC/3 7611 (NICMOS Parallel Thermal Background Test) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Three) was used to make observations of an object designated as Target-1 in order to conduct a parallel thermal background test. This test was conducted in order to measurement of the stability of the HST thermal emission. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 16 Successful : 16 2.3 Operations Notes: The SSR interrupt log was dumped at 160/1740Z.
