HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1905 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/23/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/24/97 Daily Status Report as of 175/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Three Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7709 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 7/8) The purpose of this proposal is to obtain group 7 of the on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, before the start of Cycle 7. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6903 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Decontamination) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several calibration bias observations, internal flats, K-Spot images and dark calibration images which are all part of a Cycle 6 decontamination procedure. No science was interleaved with the dark exposures. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed STIS/CCD 7659 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel Table) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make dark calibration images in order to update the acquisition bad pixel table. Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed FOC/96 6570 (High-Redshift Galaxies and Their Contribution to the Ionizing Background) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make ultraviolet objective-prism spectroscopy observations of the high-redshifted galaxy GAL-CFRS-1 in order to study its contribution to the ionization background and to study its ultraviolet spectral energy distribution from shortward of the Lyman limit to longward of Lyman-Alpha. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Five Sets of STIS/CCD 7700 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal) The Space Telescope Imaging Telescope (CCD) was used to obtain slitless spectroscopy with the G750L grism to search for emission line galaxies at intermediate-to-high redshift. Field galaxy surveys have shown that at high redshift most galaxies have strong emission lines, and are compact and blue. This suggests that star formation rates were higher than at present, and that AGN may have been more frequent. The low background and high resolution of HST separates these objects from the background. The proposal completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed Five Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7710 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 8/8) The purpose of this proposal is to obtain group 8 of the on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, before the start of Cycle 7. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal Monitor-Visual Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat fields, which will be executed twice per month. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 7727 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to obtain parallel slitless spectroscopy with the G750L grism to search for emission line galaxies at intermediate to high redshift. Field galaxy surveys have shown that at high redshift most galaxies have strong emission lines, and are compact and blue. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed STIS/CCD 7705 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 3/8) The purpose of this proposal is to obtain group 3 of the on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, before the start of Cycle 7. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.10 Completed STIS/MA2 7098 (Band I and Band II Flat Field Uniformity) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make Band 1 and Band 2 flat field uniformity calibration observations, and to measure high S/N DFLAT to assess flat field uniformity, compare to lab calibration. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7076 (STIS Corrector Alignment: Fine) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of GD153 as part of a fine correction alignment and calibration procedure. This is to refine the STIS corrector system into alignment so that the image quality at the spectrographs slit plane is optimized. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7705 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 3/8) The purpose of this proposal is to obtain group 3 of the on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, before the start of Cycle 7. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.13 Completed Three Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7706 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 4/8) The purpose of this proposal is to obtain group 4 of the on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, before the start of Cycle 7. During this proposal, at 174/154705, there was a guide star loss of lock which interrupted the STIS onboard target acquisiiton/peakup. In addition, one observation was affected. There were also five associated STIS status buffer messages. HSTARs 6099 and 6100 were written. There were no further reported problems. 1.14 Completed STIS /MA1 7086 (STIS22MB STIS Slit to Detector Internal Stability - MAMA - Part 2) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make slit-to-detector internal stability calibration observations. This was to determine the stability of the spectrograph to thermal variations in the MAMA modes. A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 6601 (Evolution of Binary Neutron Stars and Their White Dwarf Companions: Part 2) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the binary star STAR-0034, which is known to be a neutron star, with a white dwarf companion. It is also a millisecond rate pulsar. This is part of an on-going program which is intended to enlarge the sample of known white dwarf companions as new millisecond pulsars are discovered. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7703 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 1/8) The purpose of this proposal is to obtain group 1 of the on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, before the start of Cycle 7. The observations completed with no reported problems. 1.17 Completed STIS/CCD 7125 (CCD Coronographic Imaging of the Disk of Beta Pictoris) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high resolution coronographic imaging of the inner section of the edge-on disk surrounding the star HD39060 (a.k.a., Beta Pictoris). As described in HSTAR 6102, the guide star acquisiiton at 174/215539 failed when the scan step limit was exceeded. The take data flag was not up when the small angle request was issued. Two associated status buffer messages were issued. All five observations were affected. No further anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 8 Successful : 7 The failed acquisition is described in 1.17.
