HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1908 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/26/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/27/97 Daily Status Report as of 178/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 7659 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel Table) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make dark calibration images in order to update the acquisition bad pixel table. Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Eight Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7701 (NICMOS Short One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used as part of a short NICMOS one orbit parallel program, to obtain "JHK" imaging of sky regions when another instrument is prime. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed Four Sets of STIS/CCD 7601 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct bias and dark monitoring. Also, observations were made to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 6194 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5: Polarization Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make polarization observations of star BD+64D106 at four different spacecraft roll angles. This should permit a detailed and independent calibration of each polarizer quad. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Complete WF/PC-2 5993 (Dark Matter Distribution in A1689 from gravitational lensing) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy cluster Abell-1689-6 in order to study the distribution of dark matter in the lensing galaxy cluster system. This is to carry out an extensive survey of the galaxies lying behind this cluster. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed Four Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7729 (NICMOS Short One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to obtain "JHK" imaging of sky regions while another instrument was prime. These observations were part of the short NICMOS one orbit parallel program. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Earth Flats The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright Earth to obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 7700 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal) The Space Telescope Imaging Telescope (CCD) was used to obtain slitless spectroscopy with the G750L grating to search for emission line galaxies at intermediate to high redshift. Field galaxy surveys have shown that at high redshift most galaxies have strong emission lines, and are compact and blue. This suggests that star formation rates were higher than at present,and that AGN may have been more frequent. The low background and high resolution of HST separates these objects from the background. The proposal completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed STIS/CCD 7076 (STIS Corrector Alignment, Fine) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of BPM16274 as part of a fine correction alignment and calibration procedure. This is to refine the STIS corrector system into alignment so that the image quality at the spectrographs slit plane is optimized. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7553 (Pure Parallel Archive Survey II) WF/PC-2 parallel observations were obtained in the ultraviolet in search for interesting objects. This program is designed to find extragalactic sources with near ultraviolet excesses (3000 A0) outside the galactic plane and far ultraviolet sources (1600 A0) in the galactic plane. The procedure was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed STIS/MA1 7098 (Band I and Band II Flat Field Uniformity) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make Band 1 and Band 2 flat field uniformity calibration observations, and to measure high S/N DFLAT to assess flat field uniformity, compare to lab calibration. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6935 (WF/PC-2 Cycle: Photometric Transformation) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of object NGC-5139 in order to perform photometric transformations. This is a series of observations that will be used to extend the WF/PC-2 photometric transformation to include the Stromger and Johnson-Cousins systems. The observations were completed as planned and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 7675 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used in the parallel mode to obtain slitless spectroscopy with the G750L grating to search for emission line galaxies at intermediate to high redshift. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.14 Completed NIC/2 7331 (Near-IR Properties of the Bulges of Spiral Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make infrared observations of the bulge in spiral galaxy ESO499G37. Near-IR data at HST resolution are essential for correcting for the effect of dust and will enable us to derive robust nuclear properties for the sample. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 6452 (Global and Temporal Coverage of a Atmospheric Regions of the Planet Jupiter) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of selected regions of the planet Jupiter in order to investigate its atmospheric dynamics. These data will be used in the interpretations of the observations made from the Galileo Mission. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6887 (A Photometric Search for Faint Companions to Nearby Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a photometric search observations of the nearby stars L789-6-A and HD173739 in order to look for possible companions. The technique involves use of the Planetary Camera with wide band pass filters to photometrically measure for the presence of resolved dark companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7726 (NICMOS One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make a one orbit parallel calibration observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 6837 (The Ultraviolet Properties of "Dwarf" Seyfert 1 Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the "dwarf", type one, Seyfert galaxy NGC-7479. This class of "dwarf" Seyfert populate the faint end of the local AGN luminosity function and hold important clues to the evolution of the entire AGN population. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.19 Completed NIC/2 7330 (The Fueling of Active Nucleii: A NICMOS Snapshot Survey) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to probe the dark matter distribution of Mark573, far from the center, by observing intervening absorption from the MgII doublet (lambda 2800) in the spectrum of one background QSO located in a geometrically optimal position. HST observations are required because this feature is in a wavelength range not accessible from the ground, and the QSO magnitudes and expected strength of absorption make IUE observations unfeasible.
