HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1922 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 07/17/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 07/18/97 Daily Status Report as of 199/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of dark calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of STIS/MA2 7604 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make MAMA dark measurements. These darks will be used in later image reductions and also trended over the instrument's life time as an indicator of the detector's degradation or damage. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7775 (NICMOS Earth Flats) The Near Infrared Spectrograph Multi-Object Camera (NICMOS) was used to make Earth flat calibration observations. This proposal obtains a series of Earth flats for a subset of narrow-, medium-and broad-band NIC One, Two and Three filters. These flats will be used to generate the master flats for narrow-band filters and to determine the OTA illumination pattern as a function of wavelength and camera. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.4 Completed STIS/CCD 7659 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel Table) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make dark calibration images in order to update the acquisition bad pixel table. Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed NIC/2 7330 (The Fueling of Active Nucleii: A NICMOS Snapshot Survey) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to probe the dark matter distribution of M31 far from the center by observing intervening absorption from the MgII doublet (lambda 2800) in the spectrum of one background QSO located in a geometrically optimal position. HST observations are required because this feature is in a wavelength range not accessible from the ground, and the QSO magnitudes and expected strength of absorption make IUE observations unfeasible. The proposal completed as expected with no anomalies. 1.6 Completed Five Sets of STIS/CCD 7601 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct bias and dark monitoring. Also, observations were made to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6436 (High-Resolution Narrow-Band Imaging of Liners, in Search of Their Central Engines) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high-resolution, narrow-band observations of the galaxy NGC-3718 in order to search for its central engine and to try to image its Liner. More than 30% of all galaxies contain Liner nuclei, which may be the weakest but most common manifestation of quasar activity. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7726 (NICMOS One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make a one orbit parallel calibration observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7675 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used in the parallel mode to obtain slitless spectroscopy with the G750L grating to search for emission line galaxies at intermediate to high redshift. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6625 (The Second-Parameter Effect and the Formation History of the Milky Way Galaxy) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of globular cluster NGC-5897 in order to study the second-parameter effect and the formation history of the Milky Way Galaxy. Observations were made of this galactic globular cluster in order to establish an unbiased correlation between the morphology of the horizontal branch, the age of the cluster for a fixed metallicity. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6357 (The Nuclear Morphology of Elliptical Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the early type, large, elliptical galaxy NGC-5796 (taken form a list of 150 galaxies) in order to study its nuclear morphology. This survey will complement Illingworth's snapshot study of later Hubble types. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed Four Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7729 (NICMOS Short One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to obtain "JHK" imaging of sky regions while another instrument was prime. These observations were part of the short NICMOS one orbit parallel program. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed COSTAR/U 6895 (FOC Cycle 6 PSF Monitoring) The Faint Object Camera and COSTAR were used to make observations of object 01-001 (aka, white dwarf star BPM16274) in order to check out the point spread function (PSF) and focus of the system. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.14 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7727 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to obtain parallel slitless spectroscopy with the G750L grating to search for emission line galaxies at intermediate to high redshift. Field galaxy surveys have shown that at high redshift most galaxies have strong emission lines, and are compact and blue. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 6802 (Cosmology With the Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of the Medium Deep Sky Survey. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed NIC/1 7255 (NICMOS Observations of JVAS/CLASS Gravitational Lenses) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One) was used to make observations of the JVAS class, gravitational lens, quasi-stellar source QSO-0414+0. The JVAS/CLASS radio survey has been the most successful to date at finding arcsecond-scale gravitational lenses, almost doubling the known number (11 lenses found of which 10 are new discoveries). The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.18 Completed NIC/2 7331 (Near-IR Properties of the Bulges of Spiral Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make infrared observations of the bulge in spiral galaxy NGC-3928. Near-IR data at HST resolution are essential for correcting for the effect of dust and will enable us to derive robust nuclear properties for the sample. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.19 Completed WF/PC-2 6905 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal calibrations observations including biases and internal flats as part of a Cycle 6 calibration procedure. A variety of internal exposures are run weekly to verify and monitor the health of the camera. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.20 Completed WF/PC-2 7507 (Determining Peculiar Motions by Observing Cepheids at 3,000 KM/S) The WF/PC-2 V-band observations were used to detect Cepheids in the galaxy NGC 4603, which is believed to be in the Cen-30 cluster at a redshift of 3,000 kms. These are the most distant Cepheids known. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 12 Successful : 12 2.3 Operations Notes: CC1K1 was commanded to Level 4 and the K10 bypass relay was opened at 198/1212Z. This action was taken due to the increased battery temperatures. From approximately 1 deg C at 198/0030Z, the batteries reached the following temperatures by yesterday morning: Battery #1, 8.6 deg C; Battery #2, 5.2 deg C, and Battery #3, 4.3 deg C. Loads on the HST had been low. Recently, there had been a high beta angle (Sun time per orbit is near a peak). Since the relay was opened, battery temperatures have gone down. The SSR Interrupt Log was dumped at 199/0252Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science and SMOV operations. /DMH
