HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1934 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/04/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/05/97 Daily Status Report as of 217/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Six Sets of WF/PC-2 6904 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Cal.:Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of several dark calibration images as part of a standard calibration within Cycle 6. This calibration procedure is performed once per week as part of an on going CCD calibration to be used to monitor and characterize hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed FOC/96 6426 (A Search for Multiple Images of QSOs Seen Through Damped Ly-Alpha Absorbers) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of QSO PG0302-223. The propose of these observations is to obtain high-resolution images of a sample of QSOs with strong damped Lyman-Alpha absorption in their spectra. The observations should determine whether these QSOs are multiply imaged by gravitational lensing. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed Four Sets of NIC /1/2/3 7701 (NICMOS Short One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used as part of a short NICMOS one orbit parallel program, to obtain "JHK" imaging of sky regions when another instrument is prime. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7775 (NICMOS Earth Flats) The Near Infrared Spectrograph Multi-Object Camera (NICMOS) was used to make Earth flat calibration observations. This proposal obtains a series of Earth flats for a subset of narrow-, medium-and broad-band NIC 1, 2 and 3 filters. These flats will be used to generate the master flats for narrow-band filters and to determine the OTA illumination pattern as a function of wavelength and camera. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.5 Completed NIC/2 7420 (A Near-Infrared Search for Very Low Mass Companions to Stars Within 10 Parsecs of the Sun) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make searching observations for very low mass companions to variable star HD209100. This star is known to be within 10 parsecs of the Sun. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed NIC/2 7634 (CCD Flat-Field Stability and Cosmetic Defect Fraction) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to investigate and monitor the STIS CCD imaging flat-field stability and cosmetic defects over monthly periods though out Cycle 7. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed NIC/1/2 7691 (Photometric Zero Point Calibration) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One and Two) was used to perform a photometric zero point calibration. Standard stars were observed NIC/1 & NIC/2 filters to obtain the zero point flux for the set of filters. A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 7695 (NICMOS Grism Wavelength Calibration) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to perform a grism wavelength calibration. A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6625 (The Second-Parameter Effect and the Formation History of the Milky Way Galaxy) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of globular cluster NGC-6535 in order to study the second-parameter effect and formation history of the Milky way Galaxy. Observations were made of this galactic globular cluster (GC) in order to establish an unbiased correlation between the morphology of the horizontal branch (HB), the age of the cluster for a fixed metallicity. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of dark calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed STIS/CCD 7782 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal - Half Orbit) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used for a non-scripted parallel archive proposal (One-half orbit). The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed STIS/MA2 7644 (STIS NUV-MAMA Monitoring Flats) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA #2) was used to obtain Near Ultraviolet-MAMA flat-field observations for the construction of bi-monthly Delta-flats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6640 (A Stellar Population Survey of the Nuclear Region of M-33) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of a stellar population (NGC-598) which is located in galaxy M-33. Analysis of archival HST images of the nuclear region of M-33 reveal that the old, red stars are more centrally concentrated to the nucleus than the young star forming disk. The observation were executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.14 Completed Three Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7726 (NICMOS One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make a one-orbit parallel calibration observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed Two Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7729 (NICMOS Short One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two, and Three) was used to obtain "JHK" imaging of sky regions while another instrument was prime. These observations were part of the short NICMOS one orbit parallel program. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7781 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal - Full Orbit) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used for a non-scripted parallel archive proposal (One-full orbit). The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed Two Sets of S/C/STIS/MA1/MA2 7106 (STIS MAMA Fold Analysis) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2 and MA1) was used to perform STIS MAMA fold analysis. Dark calibration images were also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.18 Completed Two Sets of NIC/2 7325 (The Small Scale Structure of Protostellar Disks and Infall Envelopes) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make images of the protostellar system IRAS04361 in order to study the small scale structure of the disk and infall envelope. HST has provided striking images of circumstellar disks towards young stars, as seen silhouetted in absorption against bright nebular backgrounds. The advent of the near-infrared NICMOS camera on HST brings subarcsecond imaging to even younger sources, protostars. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 06 Successful : 06 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 08 Successful : 08 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 14 Successful : 14 2.3 Operations Notes: No anomalies were reported.
