HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1935 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/05/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/06/97 Daily Status Report as of 218/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of dark calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7659 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel Table) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make dark calibration images in order to update the acquisition bad pixel table. Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of NIC/1/2 7691 (Photometric Zero Point Calibration) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One and Two) was used to perform a photometric zero point calibration. Standard stars were observed NIC/1 & NIC/2 filters to obtain the zero point flux for the set of filters. A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed FGS 7598 (Long Term Stability of Transfer Scan Mode in FGS #3) The Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS #3) was used to make observations of standard star UPGREN69 in order to study the long term stability of the Transfer Scan Mode order to study the long term stability of the Transfer Scan Mode. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed Four Sets of STIS/CCD 7781 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal - Full Orbit) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used for a non-scripted parallel archive proposal (One full orbit). No details were given. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Seven Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7726 (NICMOS One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make a one orbit parallel calibration observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed FGS 7490 (Triton's Distorted Atmosphere) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations of Neptune's largest moon Triton in order to study the moon's distorted atmosphere. Observations were also made on several reference stars. The asymmetry of a stellar-occultation light curve for Triton observed in 1995 can be readily explained if Triton's middle atmosphere is distorted from spherical symmetry. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed Six Sets of STIS/MA2 7604 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make MAMA dark measurements. These darks will be used in later image reductions and also trended over the instrument's life time as an indicator of the detector's degradation or damage. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7328 (High Resolution IR Imaging Survey (IRIS) of the Centers of the Nearest Active Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One, Two and Three) was used to make high resolution infrared observations of the nearest active galaxies Markarian9 and NGC-5940 in order to study thier inner nuclear region. Observing in the near-IR minimizes the dust obstruction and maximizes sensitivity to the old stellar population which dominates the mass. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6770 (Resolving the Nature of Nova Shells) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the post nova remnant V476-Cyg in order to study its surrounding shells structure. Past data has indicate a strong correlation between nova speed class and the ellipticity of the resulting remnants. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6810 (The Globular Cluster System of Distant Giant Ellipticals) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of distant, giant, galaxy NGC-1129 which is located in Eridanus in order to study its globular cluster system. This galaxy is among the most luminous known. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 21 Successful : 21 2.3 Operations Notes: The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph MCE MAMA 1 reset outside the South Atlantic Anomaly (SSA) at 218/0359Z. MAMA 1 is not currently planned for use, and will be reset at appropriate times prior to the next use. The SSR Event Buffers were dumped at 217/1615Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
