HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1937 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/07/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/08/97 Daily Status Report as of 220/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of dark calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed STIS/CCD 7659 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel Table) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make dark calibration images in order to update the acquisition bad pixel table. Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 7601 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct bias and dark monitoring. Also, observations were made to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Three Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7596 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization) The Near-Infrared Camera Multi-Object Spectrograph (Cameras 1, 2 and 3) were used to make a NICMOS MULTIACCUM dark characterization. The purpose of this proposal is to monitor the darks using three different MULTIACCUM sequences. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed NIC/2 7331 (Near-IR Properties of the Bulges of Spiral Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make infrared observations of the bulge in spiral galaxy NGC-4806. Near-IR data at HST resolution are essential for correcting for the effect of dust and will enable us to derive robust nuclear properties for the sample. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 7450 (The Formation of Bulges of Spiral Galaxies: Central Visual-Infrared Color Gradients) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bulge in spiral galaxy NGC-6504 in order to obtain high-resolution optical and near infrared images for a complete survey sample of bulges of spiral galaxies. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 7782 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal - Half Orbit) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used for a non-scripted parallel archive proposal (One-half orbit). The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6502 (Evolution and Excitation of Bipolar Nebulae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bipolar nebula M2-3 in order to study its evolution and excitation. Understanding the physics of bipolar nebulae is a key means of probing the mass loss history of stars from their youngest (YSOs, HH objects) to their most evolved stages (planetary nebulae, PNe and LBVs). The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7781 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal - Full Orbit) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used for a non-scripted parallel archive proposal (One full orbit). No details were given. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7726 (NICMOS One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make a one orbit parallel calibration observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7775 (NICMOS Earth Flats) The Near Infrared Spectrograph Multi-Object Camera (NICMOS) was used to make Earth flat calibration observations. This proposal obtains a series of Earth flats for a subset of narrow-, medium-and broad-band NIC 1, 2 and 3 filters. These flats will be used to generate the master flats for narrow-band filters and to determine the OTA illumination pattern as a function of wavelength and camera. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.12 Completed Four Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7729 (NICMOS Short One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two, and Three) was used to obtain "JHK" imaging of sky regions while another instrument was prime. These observations were part of the short NICMOS one-orbit parallel program. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7328 (High Resolution IR Imaging Survey (IRIS) of the Centers of the Nearest Active Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One, Two and Three) was used to make high resolution infrared observations of the nearest active Markarian galaxy NGC-5597 in order to study its inner nuclear region. Observing in the near-IR minimizes the dust obstruction and maximizes sensitivity to the old stellar population which dominates the mass. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1/MA2 7108 (STIS MAMA Timetag Mode Test {STIS38M}) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD, MA1 and MA2) was used to make observations of the Crab Pulsar in order to demonstrate the STIS MAMA capability to accurately produce time resolved data {Timetag Mode}. The Fine Guidance Sensor (FGSA #3) guide star acquisition did not obtain fine lock at 219/1520Z, and the observations were executed using FGS #1 only. No other anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 6887 (A Photometric Search for Faint Companions to Nearby Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a photometric search observations of the nearby star HD10700 in order to look for possible companions. The technique involves use of the Planetary Camera with wide band pass filters to photometrically measure for the presence of resolved dark companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed NIC/2 7228 (Imaging and Polarimetry of YSO'S) The Near-Infrared Camera (Camera 2) was used to investigate the young stellar object (YSO) L164N with coronagraphic imaging, polarimetry, and line imaging. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 6776 (A Comparative HST Imaging Study of Radio Galaxies and Hosts) A clear understanding of the nature of the host galaxies of radio-quiet quasars (RQQs), radio-loud quasars (RLQs) and radio galaxies (RGs) is of central importance in any attempt to unify and relate the three main classes of powerful active galaxies. Existing HST studies of quasar hosts, whilst producing many interesting new results, have yielded surprisingly little hard information on the properties of the hosts themselves. This imaging study using the WF/PC-2 will remedy this situation by undertaking redder, line-free observations of our three matched AGN samples.
