HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1956 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 09/04/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 09/05/97 Daily Status Report as of 248/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 7659 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel Table) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make dark calibration images in order to update the acquisition bad pixel table. Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Three Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7596 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization) The Near-Infrared Camera Multi-Object Spectrograph (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make a NICMOS MULTIACCUM dark characterization. The purpose of this proposal is to monitor the darks using three different MULTIACCUM sequences. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two sets of Sets of STIS/CCD 7601 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct bias and dark monitoring. Also, observations were made to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7618 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Photometric Monitor UV/OPT STD) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the standard star GRW+70D582 as part of a Cycle 7 photometric monitoring program. This ultraviolet spectrophotometric standard star was observed in a variety of filters and cameras to monitor the photometric stability and quantum efficiency of WF/PC-2 from the far-ultraviolet to near-infrared. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 7619 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Decontamination) The WF/PC-2 was used to conduct a Cycle 7 Decontamination Procedure. Ultraviolet-blocking contaminants are removed, and hot pixels cured, by warming the CCDs to +20C for 6 hours. A variety of internal images are taken before and after the decontamination in order to verify its success and to monitor the instrument's health. The procedures were conducted as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD/MA1 7722 (Lamp Flux Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to make lamp flux calibration measurements to determine the optimal configuration for obtaining science-contemporaneous wavecals. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed NIC/2 7330 (The Fueling of Active Nucleii: A NICMOS Snapshot Survey) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to probe the dark matter distribution of NGC-7126 far from the center by observing intervening absorption from the MgII doublet (lambda 2800) in the spectrum of one background QSO located in a geometrically optimal position. HST observations are required because this feature is in a wavelength range not accessible from the ground, and the QSO magnitudes and expected strength of absorption make IUE observations unfeasible. The proposal completed as expected with no anomalies. 1.09 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7447 (The Cosmological Evolution of Quasar Host Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make observations of galaxy PKS2204-20 as part of a survey to study the cosmological evolution of galaxies which host quasars. Other point spread function observations were taken to test the calibration of the cameras. The guide star acquisiton for this proposal defaulted to fine lock on FGS-3 only. HSTAR 6164 was written. Otherwise, the observations were executed as scheduled, and no further anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed STIS/CCD 7785 (The Nature of GRB970228 and Its Surrounding Nebulosity) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the gamma ray burster GRB970228 and its surrounding nebulosity. Although four orbits have already been devoted to observing this object with WF/PC-2 in PC mode, no clear detection of the reported nebulosity surrounding the point source burster has been obtained. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 7786 (Pure Parallel Archive Survey - Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations as part of an archival survey program in which the images were taken in parallel with the prime science observations. These WF/PC-2 parallel observations were obtained in the ultraviolet in a search for interesting objects. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6431 (Determination of the Extragalactric Distance Scale) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-1425 to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within this galaxy. This will allow for a more accurate estimate of the distances to these galaxies through the period-luminosity relation for the Cepheid stars. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7726 (NICMOS One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make a one orbit parallel calibration observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7328 (High Resolution IR Imaging Survey (IRIS) of the Centers of the Nearest Active Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One, Two and Three) was used to make high resolution infrared observations of the nearest active Markarian galaxy IRAS2302-0 in order to study its inner nuclear region. Observing in the near-IR minimizes the dust obstruction and maximizes sensitivity to the old stellar population which dominates the mass. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 6460 (Where are the Dozens of Predicted Cataclysmic Variables in Globular Clusters?) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the globular cluster NGC-6171 in order to search for predicted cataclysmic variables. WF/PC-2 imaging of globular cluster cores provides us with a unique opportunity to detect erupting cataclysmic variables because they should be relatively common in the core region.
