HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1963 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 09/15/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 09/16/97 Daily Status Report as of 259/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2/NIC/2 7446 (The Fossil Starburst in M-82) The WF/PC-2 and the Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) were used to make observations of the Galaxy M-82 (A.K.A., NGC-3034 Section B-1) which is irregular galaxy located in Ursa Major. There is good evidence that M-82, the prototype starburst galaxy, has suffered two starburst episodes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7781 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal - Full Orbit) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used for a non-scripted parallel archive proposal (one full orbit). The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Four Sets of STIS/CCD 7782 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal - Half Orbit) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used for a non-scripted parallel archive proposal (one-half orbit). The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Four Sets of STIS/CCD 7783 (STIS Parallel Science) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science. The observations were completed , and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed STIS/CCD 7659 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel Table) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make dark calibration images in order to update the acquisition bad pixel table. Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 7619 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Decontamination) The WF/PC-2 was used to conduct a Cycle 7 decontamination procedure. Ultraviolet-blocking contaminants are removed, and hot pixels cured, by warming the CCDs to +20C for 6 hours. A variety of internal images are taken before and after the decontamination in order to verify its success and to monitor the instrument health. The procedures were conducted as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 7635 (STIS CCD Hot Pixel Annealing) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to test the hot pixel annealing procedure. The effectiveness of the CCD hot pixel annealing process is assessed by measuring the dark current behavior before and after annealing and by searching for any window contamination effects. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of STIS/MA2 7604 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make MAMA dark measurements. These darks will be used in later image reductions and also will be trended over the instrument's life time as an indicator of the detector's degradation or damage. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7793 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization) The Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) was used to obtain on-orbit darks for the SCAMRR and STEP 256 sample sequences after the flight software change for the pedestal effect on day 233. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1/MA2 7096 (STIS MAMA Sensitivity on Axis) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD/MA1/MA2) were used to make observations of BD+75D325 and GD153 in order to measure STIS sensitivity as a function of wavelength near the center of the detector for all spectroscopic modes, and check transmissions of all filters and filtered slits. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed FGS 6486 (Orbits of Pre-Main Sequence Binaries) The FGSs were used in the TRANS mode to make astrometric observations of the per-main sequence, binary star system ZZ Tau in order to help compute its orbital parameters. The observations will be used to make orbital maps of T-Tauri class stars. From these orbital parameters the first reliable mass measurements for low mass pre-main sequence stars will be derived. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.13 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7729 (NICMOS Short One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two, and Three) was used to obtain "JHK" imaging of sky regions while another instrument was prime. These observations were part of the short NICMOS one-orbit parallel program. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 13 Successful : 13 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 12 Successful : 12 2.3 Operations Notes: An automatic map using FHST-2 was scheduled for 258/143352Z. However, the occultation report indicated that FHST-2 would be occulted by either or both the sun and the moon from 258/0029Z until 258/1610Z, and occulted by the moon during the subject map from 258/1433Z until 258/1522Z. Accordingly, by ops request, the shutter for FHST-2 was closed at 258/143310Z. Target suppress was not active at the time of the shutter closure. HSTAR 6168 was written. The EDAC RAM was dumped at 258/2106Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: The first SM3 Servicing Mission Operations Working Group (SMOWG) is scheduled for today and tomorrow. /DMH
