HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #1980 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/07/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 10/08/97 Daily Status Report as of 281/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 7625 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Earth flat calibration images. These flat fields will allow mapping of the OTA illumination pattern and will be used in conjunction with previous internal and external flats to generate new pipeline superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed Nine Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7797 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization of Pedestal E) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make to make MULTIACCUM dark characterization calibration observations using Pedestal E. The purpose of this proposal is to obtain on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, after day 233 of 1997. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 7203 (Cosmology with the Medium Deep Survey - Short Orbit Cases) The WF/PC-2 was used to take short (about 20 minute) exposures, to be taken in parallel with the prime science observations, using the I filter. These exposures are part of the medium-deep survey, which emphasizes exposures that will be useful in obtaining cosmological parameters. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed STIS/CCD 7659 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel Table) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make dark calibration images in order to update the acquisition bad pixel table. Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed NIC/2 7331 (Near-IR Properties of the Bulges of Spiral Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make infrared observations of the bulge in spiral galaxy NGC-1365. Near-IR data at HST resolution are essential for correcting for the effect of dust and will enable us to derive robust nuclear properties for the sample. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7668 (Incidence Angle Correction for Non-Concentric Slits-CCD) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make calibration images needed to find the incidence angle correction for non-concentric slits-MAMA. This test will provide incidence angle corrections for CCD observations using non-concentric slits. This tests fills in missing calibrations from ground testing. The observations were completed as planned and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed STIS/MA1 7434 (The Supernova Intensive Study) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to continue the long-term project on supernovae by observing SN1987A. HST can make unique contributions to understanding supernovae, as has been demonstrated through this program in past years, and now STIS offers new opportunities for deepening this investigation. The aim of the proposal is to explore the UV emission from supernovae, exploit the spatial resolution of HST and press the late-time observations of supernovae into uncharted territory. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6519 (Parallel High Resolution Imaging of Defuse Objects in the Magellanic Clouds) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of a defuse object located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These data will allow the detailed study of the morphology and spatial relationship of various inter-stellar processes. These observations were taken in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7729 (NICMOS Short One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two, and Three) was used to obtain "JHK" imaging of sky regions while another instrument was prime. These observations were part of the short NICMOS one-orbit parallel program. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of NIC/2 7795 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 1/8) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to obtain on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, after day 233 of 1997. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7202 (The WF/PC-2 B Band Parallel Survey: A Systematic and Synoptic Study of Galaxy Formation and Evolution - Short Orbit Case) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations as part of a B-Band Survey to make synoptic study of galaxy formation and evolution. These observations were taken in parallel with the prime science observations. They were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.14 Completed Five Sets of STIS/MA1 7669 (Incidence Angle Correction for Non-Concentric Slits-MAMA) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make calibration images needed to find the incidence angle correction for non-concentric slits-MAMA. The observations were completed as planned and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed NIC/2/3 7424 (NICMOS Imaging of QSO Absorption-- Selected Galaxies at z > 1) The Near-Infrared Camera (Camera Two and Three) was used to make observations of QSO/galaxy Q0009-016. The images will also be used to connect the absorption line properties to the galaxy morphological properties, inclination angles, and orientations in order to continue to explore the connection between the absorbing gas and the galaxies. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.16 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 7782 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal - Half Orbit) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used for a non-scripted parallel archive proposal (one-half orbit). The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 7786 (Pure Parallel Archive Survey - Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations as part of an archival survey program in which the images were taken in parallel with the prime science observations. These WF/PC-2 parallel observations were obtained in the ultraviolet in a search for interesting objects. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 6559 (An Imaging Study of Asteroids) The WF/PC-2 was used to make multi-color observations of the main belt asteroid 144-VIBILI. This asteroid reached perigee during Cycle 6. The images will be searched for companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.19 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7794 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization of Pedestal B) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make to make MULTIACCUM dark characterization calibration observations using Pedestal B. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.20 Completed STIS/CCD/WF/PC-2 7367 (Multi-wavelength imaging of circumstellar disks in the Orion Nebula) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) and the WF/PC-2 were used to make multi-wavelength imaging of circumstellar disks (NGC-1976) seen as silhouettes against the bright emission-line background in the Orion Nebula. With these data one should be able to examine the radial structure of the disks in great detail, and over a wide spatial extent. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.21 Completed Two Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7798 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization of Pedestal F) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make to make MULTIACCUM dark characterization calibration observations using Pedestal F. The purpose of this proposal is to obtain on-orbit darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, after day 233 of 1997. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.22 Completed STIS/CCD/NIC/1/2/WF/PC-2 7568 (Spectroscopy of 3C Radio Galaxy Optical Jets) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD), the Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One and Two) and the WF/PC-2 were all used to make observations of the optical jets coming off of the radio galaxy 3C135. These data will be used to determine the nature of the phenomena: whether synchrotron jet radiation, entrained gas, ionized clouds or star-formation. These data will also be used to study the inner populations and dynamics of the galaxies. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.23 Completed NIC/2 7495 (Survey of Gravitational Lenses as Cosmological Tools) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make survey observations of object B1938+666 by obtaining deep, high-resolution images in the optical and near IR in order to see if they are gravitational lenses and could be used as a cosmological tool. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.24 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6802 (Cosmology With the Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of the Medium Deep Sky Survey.
