HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2009 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 11/20/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/21/97 Daily Status Report as of 325/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 7802 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel Table) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make calibration observations to obtain daily darks to update the acquisition bad pixel table. These darks are intended to identify hot pixels for update to the acquisition on-board FSW hot pixel table. Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 7601 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct bias and dark monitoring. Also, observations were made to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7327 (Elliptical Galaxy Evolution at High Redshift: IR Imaging of 60 Distant Clusters) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make infrared observations of high redshifted elliptical galaxies in galactic cluster CL1402+464. By measuring the structural properties of high redshift cluster elliptical galaxies, it is hoped to resolve the controversy regarding the age and formation history of bright cluster ellipticals. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed NIC/1/2 7329 (The Nature of the Damped LyAlpha Absorbers -- A New Study of Young Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One and Two) was used to make observations of the young galaxy 1994TB in order to study the nature of its damped Lyman-Alpha absorbers. The damped Lyman-Alpha absorption line systems, occasionally found in quasar spectra, provide one of only a few practical methods of detecting and studying significant numbers of galaxies at high redshifts. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7447 (The Cosmological Evolution of Quasar Host Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make observations of galaxy SGP2-36 as part of a survey to study the cosmological evolution of galaxies which host quasars. Other point spread function observations were taken to test the calibration of the cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Thre Sets of STIS/CCD 7782 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal - Half Orbit) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used for a non-scripted parallel archive proposal (one-half orbit). The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6802 (Cosmology With the Medium Deep Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of the Medium Deep Sky Survey. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7783 (STIS Parallel Science) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science. The observations were completed, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed STIS/MA1 6854 (Saturn's Aurora and Airglow) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make ultraviolet images of the planet Saturn's aurora and air glow regions. Saturn's auroral energy is radiated from the morning sector in both polar regions, peaking near dawn, and that intensities are variable on 10-minute time scales. This suggests that magnetosphere-solar wind interactions play a dominant role in powering the auroral emissions. The observations were completed as planned, a no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6659 (A Search For Superplanets Around Weak T- Tauri Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations in the one micron band of the T-Tauri class star HBC397 and STAR437+2 in order to search for superplanets. Weak T-Tauri class stars are thought to have dissipated their circumstellar disks recently, possibly by forming planetary systems. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed FGS 6486 (Orbits of Pre-Main Sequence Binaries) The FGSs were used in the TRANS mode to make astrometric observations of the per-main sequence, binary star system DF-Tau in order to help compute its orbital parameters. The observations will be used to make orbital maps of T-Tauri class stars. From these orbital parameters they will be able to derive the first reliable mass measurements for low mass pre-main sequence stars. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.13 Completed STIS/CCD 7781 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive Proposal - Full Orbit) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used for a non-scripted parallel archive proposal (one full orbit). The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed NIC/1 7255 (NICMOS Observations of JVAS/CLASS Gravitational Lenses) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One) was used to make observations of the JVAS class, gravitational lens, quasi-stellar source QSO-1030+0. The JVAS/CLASS radio survey has been the most successful to date at finding arcsecond-scale gravitational lenses, almost doubling the known number (11 lenses found of which 10 are new discoveries). The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 WF/PC-2 6549 (Calibration of Nearby Type Ia Supernovae as Standard Candles: NGC 3627 and SN 1989B) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the Type Ia supernova SN 1989B which is located in galaxy NGC-3627. The experiment is designed to determine the mean absolute magnitude of the B and V of SNe Ia, and how large the dispersion is about this mean. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed NIC/2/3 7811 (NICMOS Modified One Orbit Parallel) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to obtains "JH" imaging, G096 and G141 spectroscopy of sky regions when another instrument is prime. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 As described in HSTAR 6249, the acquisition at 325/073558Z defaulted to fine lock on FGS-3 only. STIS proposal 7391, and parallel NIC 7811 and WF/PC-2 7786 proposals may have been affected. These proposals occur during the period of the next report, and will be reported then.
