HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2049 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 01/28/98 - 0000Z (UTC) 01/29/98 Daily Status Report as of 029/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed NIC/3 7610 (NICMOS Plate Scale and Astrometric Calibration) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Three) was used to make observations of NGC-1850 (an open star cluster in Dorado) was used to measure the plate scale, astrometric calibration, field rotation and field distortion for the NICMOS camera. The intercamera astrometric solution will also be found. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of NIC/1/3 7813 (NIC/3 HDF Darks) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One and Three) was used to make internal dark calibration images which will be used when processing the Hubble Deep Field images during the first NICMOS Camera Three campaign. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7235 (Observations of the Hubble Deep Field) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two, and Three) was used to make observations of the Hubble Deep Field area HDF-123645. This program observes a portion of the Hubble Deep Field with all three NICMOS cameras in the F160W and F110W filters to produce infrared images equivalent in depth to the existing WF/PC-2 HDF images. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed STIS/CCD 7918 (STIS CCD Pure Parallels for NIC/3 HDF Spec) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make pure parallel, ultraviolet, slitless, spectrographic observations with the prime Hubble Deep Field observations. This proposal will run during the orbits devoted to NICMOS HDF prime proposal 7235. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed STIS/CCD 7900 (STIS CCD Pure Parallels for NIC/3 HDF) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make pure parallel, ultraviolet, slitless, observations with the NIC/3 Camera. This proposal will run during the orbits devoted to NICMOS HDF prime proposal 7235. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed NIC/3 7459 (The Age and Content of a {Proto}Galaxy Cluster at z=2.39) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Three) was used to make observations of the proto-galaxy cluster Gal-Clust-1239. Our WF/PC-2 observations of the field around the radio galaxy 53W002 {z=2.39} have discovered a remarkable population of Lyman Alpha emission-line objects at the same redshift, with 18 identified in a single WF/PC-2 mosaic. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 As reported in HSTAR 6330, the acquisition scheduled at 029/052159Z defaulted to fine lock on FGS-2 only when FGS-1 lost lock. Two proposals which are described in tomorrow's report may have been affected: STIS 124 and NIC/3 7919. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 14 Successful : 14 2.3 Operations Notes: The NICMOS Hubble Deep Field proposals continue to be successfully completed, although, as mentioned in 2.1 the single observation for NIC/3 7919 (Camera 3 Snapshots) may have been impacted. The NSSC-1 status buffer was dumped at 029/0651Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
