HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2059 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/11/98 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/12/98 Daily Status Report as of 043/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 7711 (STIS CCD G750L Fringing Flats.) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to investigate and monitor the STIS CCD flat-field fringing in the G750L grating at its nominal wavelength setting {7751A}. WAVECALs were also taken at the same gain and wavelength setting. Typical S/N = 100 for each integration, and gain = 4 on each. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed STIS/CCD 7803 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel Table Part III) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make daily dark calibration updates. These daily darks are intended to identify hot pixels for update to the acquisition on-board FSW hot pixel table. Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Five Sets of STIS/CCD 7908 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make calibration observations as part of the POMS Test Proposal. This was a STIS non-scripted parallel proposal. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed STIS/CCD 7333 (STIS Images of 48 Damped Ly-Alpha Galaxies) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the damped Lyman-Alpha galaxy PKS0458-02. This study will unify absorption-line studies, and faint galaxy imaging studies, thereby allowing a detailed treatment of the history of star formation, gas consumption, chemical enrichment, and assembly in the population of galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 7909 (POMS Test Proposal: WF II Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make parallel observations as part of the POMS test proposal. This test proposal is designed to simulate scientific plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 7625 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Earth flat calibration images. These flat fields will allow mapping of the OTA illumination pattern and will be used in conjunction with previous internal and external flats to generate new pipeline superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 7674 (IR Standards) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of standard star G191B2B in order to establish a set of absolute flux standards on the WD scale that extend the existing wavelength coverage to 10300A with the STIS G750L grating setting. The proposal completed with no reported problems. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 7336 (Cosmological Parameters Omega and Lambda >From High-Redshift Type Ia Supernovae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the high redshifted Type Ia supernova SN2-5h-Z0. HST can make a direct measurement of the cosmological parameters, Omega, Lambda, and curvature, using Type Ia supernovae as calibrated "standard candles." The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 7505 (The Hubble Diagram for Distant Supernovae Measuring Cosmic Deceleration and Global Curvature) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Super Nova SN1998A1 in order to produce a precise Hubble diagram from measuring cosmic deceleration and global curvature. HST can make an essential contribution by providing photometry with substantially higher precision and better temporal coverage than can be obtained from the ground. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7294 (Observations of a BL Lacertid with a Unique Absorption Line System) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of a BL-Lac class object AO0235+164 to study its unique line structure. The line of sight for this object passes close to two luminous objects. One of these objects {or both} produces a unique variable 21 cm absorption line system in the radio spectrum. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 7387 (T-Tauri Star Snapshot Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the star DE-Tau as part of a T-Tauri class star survey. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed Two Sets of NIC/2/3 7907 (NICMOS Pure Parallel Winter 97-98) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to make pure parallel spectrographic observations of sky regions when another instrument is prime. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.14 Completed NIC/2 7420 (A Near-Infrared Search for Very Low Mass Companions to Stars Within 10 Parsecs of the Sun) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make searching observations for very low mass companions to variable star BD+43D4305. This star is known to be within 10 parsecs of the Sun. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed NIC/2/3 7453 (The SBF Hubble Diagram) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two and Three) was used to make deep NICMOS observations of galaxy NGC-4472 to determine its distance using the surface brightness fluctuation {SBF} method. HST is essential for its high spatial resolution which makes it possible to detect and remove globular clusters and background galaxies that contaminate the SBF measurement.
