HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2060 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/12/98 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/13/98 Daily Status Report as of 044/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 7803 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel Table Part III) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make daily dark calibration updates. These daily darks are intended to identify hot pixels for update to the acquisition on-board FSW hot pixel table. Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of NIC/2/3 7453 (The SBF Hubble Diagram) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two and Three) was used to make deep NICMOS observations of galaxies NGC-4472 and NGC-4406 to determine its distance using the surface brightness fluctuation {SBF} method. HST is essential for its high spatial resolution which makes it possible to detect and remove globular clusters and background galaxies that contaminate the SBF measurement. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed FGS 6885 (L726-8/ UV-Ceti) The FGSs were used in both the POS and TRANS modes to make astrometric observations of the star UV-Ceti. This is to look for short period, low mass companions in orbit around the star. The observations were completed as planned, an no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 7909 (POMS Test Proposal: WF II Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make parallel observations as part of the POMS test proposal. This test proposal is designed to simulate scientific plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed Two Sets of NIC/2/3 7907 (NICMOS Pure Parallel Winter 97-98) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to make pure parallel spectrographic observations of sky regions when another instrument is prime. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed Five Sets of STIS/CCD 7908 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make calibration observations as part of the POMS Test Proposal. This was a STIS non-scripted parallel proposal. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 7674 (IR Standards) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of stadard star GRW+70D582 in order to establish a set of absolute flux standards on the WD scale that extend the existing wavelength coverage to 10300 A0 with the STIS G750L grating setting. The proposal completed with no reported problems. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6598 (The Reddest Objects in The Universe) The WF/PC-02 was used to make observations of the object ERO0424+02 which is known to be one of the reddest objects in the universe. This is one of the members of a recent deep K-Band imaging surveys which discovered a new population of infrared bright, extremely red (R-K~gt 6 class), objects (EROS). The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed NIC/1 7451 (Gravitational Lensing by Damped Ly-Alpha Absorbers) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One) was used to make observations of object Q1209+1046 in order to study gravitational lensing in damped Lyman-Alpha absorbers. Damped Lyman-Alphas are thought to arise in the disk of the progenitors of present-day spiral galaxies. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7328 (High Resolution IR Imaging Survey (IRIS) of the Centers of the Nearest Active Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One, Two and Three) was used to make high resolution infrared observations of the nearest active Markarian galaxy in order to study its inner nuclear region. Observing in the near-IR minimizes the dust obstruction and maximizes sensitivity to the old stellar population which dominates the mass. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed NIC/2 7331 (Near-IR Properties of the Bulges of Spiral Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make infrared observations of the bulge in spiral galaxy NGC-3949. Near-IR data at HST resolution are essential for correcting for the effect of dust and will enable us to derive robust nuclear properties for the sample. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1/MA2 7673 (STIS MAMA Sensitivity and Focus Monitor) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD/MA1/MA2) was used to make observations of standard star GRW+70D582 in order to perform a MAMA sensitivity and focus monitoring program. This is to monitor sensitivity of each MAMA grating mode to detect any change due to contamination or other causes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed NIC/2 7420 (A Near-Infrared Search for Very Low Mass Companions to Stars Within 10 Parsecs of the Sun) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make searching observations for very low mass companions to variable star LHS1809. This star is known to be within 10 parsecs of the Sun. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed NIC/2 7219 (Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make observations of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy NGC-6240. The luminous IRAS galaxies are probably powered by nuclear starbursts and/or central AGNs; many of these systems exhibit evidence of recent galactic interaction or merging. A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed NIC/1/2 7365 (Unscrambling the Near-Infrared Properties of Young Planetary Nebulae) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One and Two) was used to make observations of the young planetary nebula around star HD44179. Objects of this class display a number of enigmatic features that have prevented a full understanding of post-asymptotic giant branch stellar evolution. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.17 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7625 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Earth flat calibration images. These flat fields will allow mapping of the OTA illumination pattern and will be used in conjunction with previous internal and external flats to generate new pipeline superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 13 Successful : 12 As described in HSTAR 6342, the acquisition scheduled at 044/0546659Z failed when the scan steps limit was exceeded.
