HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2173 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 07/24/98 - 0000Z (UTC) 07/27/98 Daily Status Report as of 208/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7829 (Mapping H_2 Emission around T Tauri Stars) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two, and Three) was used to study the distribution of circumstellar dust and molecular {H_2} gas around the classical T Tauri star HD284419 {cTTS}, probing both the near circumstellar environment {the accretion disk} as well as the environment further out where strong winds from these stars may be interacting with remnants of the cloud material from which they formed. The primary goal is to map the distribution of the molecular gas around cTTS. As documented in HSTAR 6592 and as described in the previous report, there was a one-minute, 25-second loss of lock during this proposal, beginning at 205/010605Z. Otherwise, the proposal completed nominally. 1.2 Completed Seven Sets of WF/PC-2 7712 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt2/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 7 supplemental calibration darks. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Seven Sets of STIS/CCD 8064 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal - Backup) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a non-scripted parallel POMS test. As documented in HSTAR 6592 and as described in the previous report, there was a one-minute, 25-second loss of lock during the first iteration of this proposal, beginning at 205/010605Z. Otherwise, the observations were completed as scheduled, and no further problems were reported. 1.4 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 7620 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Standard Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 7 standard dark calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains dark frames every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Six Sets of STIS/CCD 7948 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to Dec. 98) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to measure CCD dark current and bias rates for the two supported amplifier settings {GAIN=1 and GAIN=4} in order to gather data for making superdarks and superbiases. The data will be used to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Six Sets of WF/PC-2 7909 (POMS Test Proposal: WF II Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make parallel observations as part of the POMS test proposal. This test proposal is designed to simulate scientific plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of NIC/1 7833 (Multiplicity Survey of Alpha Persei: Studying the Evolution and Effects of Companions) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One) was used to make observations of the star Alpha-Persei. Extensive observations have established that binaries are twice as common amongst pre-main sequence stars than older solar neighborhood G-dwarfs. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed NIC/2 7894 (Completing A Near-Infrared Search for Very Low Mass Companions to Stars within 10 pc) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make observations searching for very low mass (VLM) companions to the star BD+43D2796. This search will be the largest, most sensitive, volume-limited search for VLM companions ever undertaken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD/NIC/2/3/WF/PC-2 7778 (Absorption Lines From Very Highly Ionized Atoms in Front of Quasars) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD), the WF/PC-2 and the Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) were used to make observations of quasar HS1700+641 to study foreground absorption lines from highly ionized atoms. Bright quasars that have a large z{em} and no intervening Lyman-limit systems with large column densities present an excellent opportunity to learn more about distant intergalactic gas regions at very high temperatures. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed Ten Sets of STIS/MA2 7604 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make MAMA dark measurements. These darks will be used in later image reductions and also trended over the instrument's life time as an indicator of the detector's degradation or damage. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7387 (T-Tauri Star Snapshot Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the stars V827-Tau and 041529+165as part of a T-Tauri class star survey. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed Two Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7875 (Searching for Old Stellar Populations in Candidate Proto-Spheroidals) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make observations searching for old stellar populations in candidate proto-spheroids SA68-9640 and SA68-17169. We have compelling evidence from WF/PC-2 images that these galaxies have optical colors gradients. The near-infrared is necessary, however, to reveal color gradients large enough to separate young and old stellar populations. Only NICMOS imaging provides enough spatial resolution and depth to resolve these gradients. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 7910 (STIS Extragalactic Parallel Survey) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make extragalactic slitless spectrographic observations as part of the parallel high galactic latitude survey to search for emission line galaxies. Data was taken in parallel, and are not subject to proprietary time. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2/STIS/CCD/NIC/1/2/3 7307 (The Formation and Evolution of Rich Star Clusters in the LMC) The WF/PC-2, the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD), and the Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) were used to make observations of the rich star cluster NGC-1831 which is located within the Large Magellanic Cloud in order to study its formation and evolution. These observations will help us understand the origin and evolution of rich star clusters in our own galaxy. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed NIC/2 7326 (Coronagraphic, Polarimetric Imaging of T Tau with NICMOS) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make coronagraphic, polarization observations of the binary star T-Tau, HD284419 and the Hinds Nebula. The binary system interacts with Burnham's emission nebula, Hind's reflection nebula and the nearby Herbig-Haro objects. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 7618 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Photometric Monitor UV/OPT STD) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the standard star GRW+70D582 as part of a Cycle 7 photometric monitoring program. This ultraviolet spectrophotometric standard star was observed in a variety of filters and cameras to monitor the photometric stability and quantum efficiency of WF/PC-2 from the far-ultraviolet to near-infrared. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.17 Completed NIC/2/3 7907 (NICMOS Pure Parallel Winter 97-98) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to make pure parallel spectrographic observations of sky regions when another instrument is prime. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.18 Completed STIS/CCD/WF/PC-2/NIC/1/2/3 7567 (Supplement to the STIS Dynamics IKP) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD), the WF/PC-2 and the Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) were used to make observations of normal galaxy M-87. Detection of supermassive black holes in normal galaxies is one of the grand challenges that HST was designed to meet. A wavelength and CCD flat calibration images were also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.19 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/MA1 7308 (HST FAR-UV Imaging and Spectra of Jupiter's Aurora Coordinated With Galileo) The WF/PC-2 was used to make far-ultraviolet imaging and spectral observations of the aurora near both poles of the planet Jupiter at the same time as scheduled GALILEO spacecraft measurements of Jupiter's magnetospheric properties and ultraviolet emissions over summer/fall 1997. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.20 Completed NIC/1/2 7849 (Metallicity and the Cepheid Distance Scale) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One and Two) was used to make observations of Cepheid variable stars in the NGC-2090 galaxy. The local distance scale to galaxies is largely based on the Cepheid period-luminosity relation. Motivated by the goal of measuring an accurate value of the Hubble constant, HST has been used successfully to discover scores of Cepheid variables in each of about 20 galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.21 Completed WF/PC-2 8059 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-2 Targeted Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations in parallel with the prime science observations. The parallel opportunities available with WF/PC-2 in the neighborhood of bright galaxies are treated in a slightly different way from the normal pure parallels. Local Group galaxies offer the opportunity for a closer look at young stellar populations. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.22 Completed Nine Sets of WF/PC-2 8061 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Backup Parallel Archive Proposal) This is a POMS test proposal designed to simulate scientific plans.
