HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2201 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 09/02/98 - 0000Z (UTC) 09/03/98 Daily Status Report as of 246/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 8064 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal - Backup) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a non-scripted parallel POMS test. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7712 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt2/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 7 supplemental calibration darks. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7984 (HDF Limiting Magnitude/Resolution Extension and Object Variability Search) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations to be used for HDF limiting magnitude/resolution extension and object variability search. This will be a search for supernovae at high Z in the HDF. A bias and a dark calibration image were also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Three Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7899 (An IR Search For faint Companions to Pleiades Very Low-Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make observations of TEIDEL1, ROQUE13 and CFHT-PL-16. This is part of a infrared campaign to search for faint companions to Pleiades very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. The Pleiades has been the best site for brown dwarf {BD} searches, with half of the presently "confirmed" BDs being Pleiades members. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8061 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Backup Parallel Archive Proposal) This is a POMS test proposal designed to simulate scientific plans. The proposal was executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed STIS/CCD 8062 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations take in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed NIC/3 7830 (IR Spectra for Known-Mass M Dwarfs) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Three) was used to make infrared spectrographic observations of M-Class dwarf star GJ22ABC. Over the last decade there has been considerable debate on two major issues in the low-mass star literature: {1} the effective temperature scale for M dwarfs and its relation to mass and luminosity and {2} the conversion from an absolute magnitude in some passband to a bolometric magnitude. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD/MA1 7565 (Comparison of Protoplanetary Disks) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to make observations of the protoplanetary system around star HD-163296. This is to search for planets and disk structures around nearby bright stars, comparing an example of a solar type and a hotter star, each with a main sequence and a pre-main sequence star, using broad band coronagraphic imaging using the STIS CCD. Multiple roll angles were used to minimize systematic errors and image artifacts. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7909 (POMS Test Proposal: WF II Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make parallel observations as part of the POMS test proposal. This test proposal is designed to simulate scientific plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed Six Sets of NIC/2/3 7907 (NICMOS Pure Parallel Winter 97-98) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to make pure parallel spectrographic observations of sky regions when another instrument is prime. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed STIS/MA1 7298 (A Snapshot Survey for UV bright Quasars at redshift below 3) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make ultraviolet snapshot observations of the bright quasar PKS1448-23 which has a redshift (Z) below 3.0. The goal is to find quasars bright enough in the ultraviolet for spectroscopic follow-up in the range 900 -- 1200 Angstroms. A wave length calibration image was also taken. The observation were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6535 (Tight Clusters of Newly Born Massive Stars in Compact H2 Regions of the Magellanic Clouds) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high spatial resolution imaging observations of the newly born massive stars in the tight cluster LMC-N159-5 which is located in a tight H2 region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These are the youngest massive stars accessible to direct observations at ultraviolet and optical wavelengths. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.13 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 7912 (STIS Parallel Archive Proposal - Nearby Galaxies - Imaging and Spectroscopy) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make parallel observations of nearby galaxies. This survey will be useful to study the star formation histories, chemical evolution, and distances to these galaxies. These data will be placed immediately into the Hubble Data Archive. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.14 Completed NIC/2 7227 (A Search for Low Mass/Sub-Luminous Companions to M-Stars) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make a search for low mass/sub-luminous companions to low mass M class stars. Knowledge of stellar and sub-stellar masses and luminosities at and below the ~0.08 M{sun} H-burning limit is of fundamental importance. A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.15 Completed NIC/2 6767 (A Search for Brown Dwarfs and Luminous Young Planets in the Hyades) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make observations of the brown dwarf star RHY202 which is located in the Hyades Cluster. This is to search for substellar companions orbiting low-mass Hyades M class dwarf stars. Differential imaging was used using methane and water band (on/off) filter pairs.
