HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2202 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 09/03/98 - 0000Z (UTC) 09/04/98 Daily Status Report as of 247/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7712 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt2/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 7 supplemental calibration darks. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed STIS/CCD 7948 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to Dec. 98) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to measure CCD dark current and bias rates for the two supported amplifier settings {GAIN=1 and GAIN=4} in order to gather data for making superdarks and superbiases. The data will be used to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7899 (An IR Search For faint Companions to Pleiades Very Low-Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make observations of REQUEL14 and CFHT-PL-17. This is part of a infrared campaign to search for faint companions to Pleiades very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. The Pleiades has been the best site for brown dwarf {BD} searches, with half of the presently "confirmed" BDs being Pleiades members. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Five Sets of STIS/CCD 8062 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations take in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed NIC/2 7329 (The Nature of the Damped LyAlpha Absorbers -- A New Study of Young Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make observations of the young galaxy BR2248-124 in order to study the nature of its damped Lyman-Alpha Absorbers (DLAs). The DLA line systems, occasionally found in quasar spectra, provide one of only a few practical methods of detecting and studying significant numbers of galaxies at high redshifts. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6776 (A Comparative HST Imaging Study of Radio Galaxies and Hosts) A clear understanding of the nature of the host galaxies of radio-quiet quasars, radio-loud quasars and radio galaxies is of central importance in any attempt to unify and relate the three main classes of powerful active galaxies. Existing HST studies of quasar hosts, whilst producing many interesting new results, have yielded surprisingly little hard information on the properties of the hosts themselves. This imaging study using the WF/PC-2 will remedy this situation by undertaking redder, line-free observations of AGN 1E15498+20. The proposal completed with no reported problems. 1.7 Completed STIS/CCD 7565 (Comparison of Protoplanetary Disks) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the protoplanetary system around star HD-163296. This is to search for planets and disk structures around nearby bright stars, comparing an example of a solar type and a hotter star, each with a main sequence and a pre-main sequence star, using broad band coronagraphic imaging using the STIS CCD. Multiple roll angles were used to minimize systematic errors and image artifacts. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7909 (POMS Test Proposal: WF II Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make parallel observations as part of the POMS test proposal. This test proposal is designed to simulate scientific plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed NIC/2 7835 (A Search for Superplanets Embedded in Beta Pic & Vega-like Circumstellar Disks) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make observations of the circumstellar disk around star HD155826 in order to search for superplanets. The discovery of a circumstellar disk orbiting Beta Pictoris as well as the discovery of other similar IR-excess Vega-like systems have provided compelling evidence that our solar system, or at least many of the processes which are thought to have created it, may be far from unique. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/CCD/MA1/NIC/1/2/3 7586 (Ultra-Hot Nuclei and Their Surrounding Planetary Nebulae) The WF/PC-2, The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) and the Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) were used to make observations of the ultra-hot nuclei (white dwarf) and its associated planetary nebula of SAND3. UV and optical spectra of hot pre-white dwarfs and white dwarfs, often in planetary nebulae, show emission from ions characterizing temperatures far above that of the photosphere. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed NIC/2 7894 (Completing A Near-Infrared Search for Very Low Mass Companions to Stars within 10 pc) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make observations searching for very low mass (VLM) companions to the star LHS337. This search will be the largest, most sensitive, volume-limited search for VLM companions ever undertaken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7849 (Metallicity and the Cepheid Distance Scale) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make observations of Cepheid variable stars in the NGC-1365 galaxy. The local distance scale to galaxies is largely based on the Cepheid period-luminosity relation. Motivated by the goal of measuring an accurate value of the Hubble constant, HST has been used successfully to discover scores of Cepheid variables in each of about 20 galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8059 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-2 Targeted Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations in parallel with the prime science observations. The parallel opportunities available with WF/PC-2 in the neighborhood of bright galaxies are treated in a slightly different way from the normal pure parallels. Local group galaxies offer the opportunity for a closer look at young stellar populations. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.14 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8064 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal - Backup) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a non-scripted parallel POMS test. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.15 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8061 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Backup Parallel Archive Proposal) This is a POMS test proposal designed to simulate scientific plans. The proposal was executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.16 Completed NIC/2 6767 (A Search for Brown Dwarfs and Luminous Young Planets in the Hyades) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make observations of the brown dwarf star RHY199 which is located in the Hyades Cluster. This is to search for substellar companions orbiting low-mass Hyades M class dwarf stars. Differential imaging was used using methane and water band (on/off) filter pairs. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.17 Completed FGS 7681 (FGS-3 Red Transfer Function Reference Calibration) The Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS-3, the astrometer) were used to make observations of HD59149 in order to perform a red transfer function reference calibration through the pupil, clear and neutral density filters at the center of the FGS-3 field of view. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.18 Completed Eight Sets of NIC/2/3 7907 (NICMOS Pure Parallel Winter 97-98) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to make pure parallel spectrographic observations of sky regions when another instrument is prime. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.19 Completed Two Sets of NIC/2/3 8063 (NICMOS Pure Parallel Sponge - Backup) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. This proposal is PRE-the new FOM default. HSTARs 6646 and 6647 were written for NICMOS EDAC single bit errors that occurred at 246/190056Z and at 247/075656Z respectively. After each occurrence, the NICMOS internal log was dumped and the limit for the parameter NSBITERR was adjusted. Using ROP NS-03, the NSSC-1 status buffer was dumped at 247/0246Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: The battery #6 capacity will be checked on September 8 and 9. The battery will be taken offline, discharge will terminate approximately 15-18 hours from the start of discharge, and the resulting data will be analyzed.
