HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2222 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/02/98 - 0000Z (UTC) 10/05/98 Daily Status Report as of 278/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/CCD/MA2/NIC/1/2/3 8073 (HDF-South Observations) The WF/PC-2, The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2 and CCD) and the Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) all were used to make deep observations of the Hubble Deep Fields- South (HDFS-22333). This program is designed to provide deep observations of a high-galactic latitude field in the southern continuous viewing zone. The STIS field is centered on a bright QSO at z=2.25. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7712 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt2/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 7 supplemental calibration darks. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD/MA2/WF/PC-2/NIC/1/2/3 8074 (HDF-South Observations) The WF/PC-2, The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2 and CCD) and the Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) all were used to make deep observations of the Hubble Deep Fields- South (HDFS-22333). This program is designed to provide deep observations of a high-galactic latitude field in the southern continuous viewing zone. The STIS field is centered on a bright QSO at z=2.25. During the second iteration of this proposal, the loss of lock described in 2.1 and HSTAR 6702 occurred. One NIC and one STIS observation were affected when the take data flag went down temporarily. Otherwise, the observations were executed as scheduled, and no further anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD/MA2/WF/PC-2/NIC/1/2/3 8075 (HDF-South Observations) The WF/PC-2, The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2 and CCD) and the Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) all were used to make deep observations of the Hubble Deep Fields- South (HDFS-22333). This program is designed to provide deep observations of a high-galactic latitude field in the southern continuous viewing zone. The STIS field is centered on a bright QSO at z=2.25. During the first iteration of this proposal, the loss of lock described in 2.1 and HSTAR 6703 occurred. One WF/PC-2, one NIC, and one STIS observation were affected when the take data flag went down temporarily. Otherwise, the observations were executed as scheduled, and no further anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 12 Successful : 12 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 18 Successful : 18 HSTAR 6702 documents a loss of lock that occurred at 277/023421Z while guiding on FGSs 1 and 3. The proposal described in 1.3 was affected. A loss of lock occurred at 277/215546Z while guiding on FGSs 1 and 3 during the execution of the proposal described in 1.4. At the time of the occurrence there were spikes in the vehicle rates, the observer bias, and the position path, possibly indicating a vehicle disturbance. HSTAR 6703 was written. 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 12 Successful : 12 2.3 Operations Notes: The Hubble Deep Field - South (HDF-S) campaign continues. The proposals described in 1.3 and 1.4 were affected by temporary losses of lock that were documented in HSTARs 6702 and 6703. Using ROP SR-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was reset nine times. Another iteration of the GRGT proficiency test was successfully completed at 275/1945Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
