HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2231 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/16/98 - 0000Z (UTC) 10/19/98 Daily Status Report as of 292/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Six Sets of WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt3/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Seven Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7963 (DARKs: Warming Up) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to monitor the detector dark current during the interval between the end of science observations and the exhaustion of cryogen and subsequent warming of the dewar to > 100K. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of NIC/2 7897 (Probing Planetary Formation Around Main-Sequence Stars: A Snapshot Survey) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make snapshort survey images of the main sequence stars HR7474, HR6297 and HR664 probing for planetary formation. The IR excess main-sequence stars host cool circumstellar dust disks, which are most likely replenished by the debris of unseen planetesimals. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.4 Completed NIC/1/2 7329 (The Nature of the Damped LyAlpha Absorbers -- A New Study of Young Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One and Two) was used to make observations of the young galaxy Q0836+1122 in order to study the nature of its damped Lyman-Alpha Absorbers (DLAs). The DLA line systems, occasionally found in quasar spectra, provide one of only a few practical methods of detecting and studying significant numbers of galaxies at high redshifts. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 7431 (Snapshot Survey of Microlensed Source Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey images of microlensed source star MACHO-96-B. Gravitational microlensing surveys have revealed an excess of lensing events over theoretical predictions toward both the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Galactic Bulge. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7635 (STIS CCD Hot Pixel Annealing) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to test the hot pixel annealing procedure. The effectiveness of the CCD hot pixel annealing process is assessed by measuring the dark current behavior before and after annealing and by searching for any window contamination effects. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 7632 (HST Heritage Program) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy NGC-6720 as part of the HST Heritage Program. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Three Sets of NIC/2/3 8082 (NICMOS pure parallel Fall 98) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to make pure parallel observations while another instrument is prime. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed NIC/2 7895 (HST NICMOS SNAPSHOT Observations of Field Galaxies at Z < 1) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make observations of the field galaxies GAL131213, GAL-131216, GAL-131222 and GAL-131219. The proposed NICMOS observation will provide their morphology in rest frame near infrared (NIR) wavelengths {8000 - 16000 A}, where the effect of dust extinction is less severe, and their NIR colors. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed Five Sets of STIS/CCD 7948 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to Dec. 98) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to measure CCD dark current and bias rates for the two supported amplifier settings {GAIN=1 and GAIN=4} in order to gather data for making superdarks and superbiases. The data will be used to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7690 (NICMOS Pointed Super Flats) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make super flat field calibration observations. The observations will be used to build high signal/noise ratio NICMOS flat fields for the different filters. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed NIC/1 7821 (SINS: The Supernova Intensive Study - Cycle 7+: Scarlet SINS) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One) was used to make observations of the super nova LMC-SN1987 which is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Supernovae create the chemical history of the Universe, energize the interstellar gas, and stand at the center of efforts to understand the extragalactic distance scale. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 8059 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-2 Targeted Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations in parallel with the prime science observations. The parallel opportunities available with WF/PC-2 in the neighborhood of bright galaxies are treated in a slightly different way from the normal pure parallels. Local group galaxies offer the opportunity for a closer look at young stellar populations. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.14 Completed STIS/CCD 7912 (STIS Parallel Archive Proposal - Nearby Galaxies - Imaging and Spectroscopy) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make parallel observations of nearby galaxies. This survey will be useful to study the star formation histories, chemical evolution, and distances to these galaxies. These data will be placed immediately into the Hubble Data Archive. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.15 Completed Five Sets of STIS/CCD 8062 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations take in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 8061 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Backup Parallel Archive Proposal) This is a POMS test proposal designed to simulate scientific plans. The proposal was executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.17 Completed NIC/3 7863 (The Nature of Gamma-Ray Burster Host Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Three) was used to study the nature of a gamma-ray burster in the host galaxy GRB980329. Of the two thousand gamma-ray bursts detected in the last twenty-five years, only two have identified optical counterparts. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.18 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7909 (POMS Test Proposal: WF II Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make parallel observations as part of the POMS test proposal. This test proposal is designed to simulate scientific plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.19 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8064 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal - Backup) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a non-scripted parallel POMS test. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.20 Completed Two Sets of NIC/2 7226 (Search for Massive Jupiters) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make a corographic search for massive planets around the nearby, young main sequence star GL311. Because of the extreme youth of these objects, any low-mass brown dwarf and planetary companions will still be in a higher luminosity phase and thus easily detectable. A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.21 Completed WF/PC-2 7386 (A Snapshot Survey of Nova Shells) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observational images of the super nova shell Nova-Cen-1 in order to detect and measure its expanding gaseous shell. These observations will trace the distribution of hot and cool gas in the nova shells, and show their degree of inhomogeneity on both large and small scales. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.22 Completed WF/PC-2 7618 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Photometric Monitor UV/OPT STD) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the standard star GRW+70D582 as part of a Cycle 7 photometric monitoring program. This ultraviolet spectrophotometric standard star was observed in a variety of filters and cameras to monitor the photometric stability and quantum efficiency of WF/PC-2 from the far-ultraviolet to near-infrared. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.23 Completed WF/PC-2 7626 (UV Throughput) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of GRW+70D582 as part of as ultraviolet throughput monitoring program. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.24 Completed WF/PC-2/NIC/2 6868 (Super Flat Galactic Disks) The WF/PC-2 and the Near Infrared Camera (Camera #2) were used to make observations of the super flat disk on late type galaxy HH7-11 which is located in our local super cluster. These data will be suitable for studies of the structures of the disks as well as properties of disk components, such as dark nebulae and star clusters. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.25 Completed FGS 7697 (Focal Plane Monitoring Program) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations of the standard star 41W3GSC as part of the focal plane monitoring program. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.26 Completed NIC/1 7892 (Narrow-band Imaging of BAL QSOs) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One) was used to make narrow band observations of the BL-Lac (BAL) UM139. The detection of extended emission-line gas structures in BAL QSOs would offer another means of investigating the BAL QSO phenomenon as well as establishing a new probe of material in galaxies at high redshift. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.27 Completed NIC/2 7887 (A Survey of Gravitational Lenses as Cosmological Tools II) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make observations of the gravitational lens candidate system RXJ09114+0. The purpose is to extend our IR survey of gravitational lenses and gravitational lens candidates by obtaining NICMOS images of 14 additional lens systems or candidates. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.28 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7886 (NICMOS Snap Shot Survey of Early-Type Galaxies) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make observations of the early-type galaxy NGC-1331 as part of a snap-shot broad-band imaging survey. Since almost all early-type galaxies harbor dust, these images which are less sensitive to extinction and will provide superior light profiles for dynamical studies of the cores of these galaxies. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.29 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7893 (The Two Types of BL Lac Objects: Extrema of Jet Physics) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make observations of the BL Lac object OJ287. These observations will build on the WF/PC-2 survey of a well-defined sample of 97 BL Lac objects, for which host galaxies were detected in 90 simulations predict ~100 provide essential constraints on galaxy properties -- luminosity, size, morphology, and color -- including an unprecedented ensemble of host galaxy color profiles at subarcsecond spatial resolution. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.30 Completed WF/PC-2 7427 (Saturn's Rings) The WF/PC-2 was used to make imaging observations of both the east and west apsides of Saturn's rings. Saturn's rings are a unique dynamical laboratory and continue to present challenging problems which require additional data to attack. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.31 Completed STIS/CCD/WF/PC-2/NIC/1/2/3 7286 (Spectrophotometry and Imaging of Cometary Knots in the Helix Nebula) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD), the WF/PC-2 and the Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) were all used to make spectrographic and imaging observations of the cometary knots in the Helix Nebula (a.k.a., NGC-7293). Previous HST imaging, the closest of the representatives of this important stage of stellar evolution, have revealed that the filaments are actually cometary outline photoionized regions surrounding dusty knots. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.32 Completed WF/PC-2 7497 (WF/PC-2 Observations of Astrophysically Important Visual Binaries) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the visual binary variable star system G107-70. This system is a famous metal-deficient G dwarf for which accurate masses will lead to the star's helium content with cosmological implications. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.33 Completed NIC/2 7835 (A Search for Superplanets Embedded in Beta Pic & Vega-like Circumstellar Disks) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make observations of the circumstellar disk around star HD87696 in order to search for superplanets. The discovery of a circumstellar disk orbiting Beta Pictoris as well as the discovery of other similar IR-excess Vega-like systems have provided compelling evidence that our solar system, or at least many of the processes which are thought to have created it, may be far from unique. This weekend, there were five instances of NICMOS EDAC single bit errors: at 289/090059Z, at 289/090659Z, at 289/155659Z, at 290/000755Z, and at 290090455Z. For the first two, HSTAR 6722 was written, and the NICMOS internal log was dumped after the second occurrence when the ground system linit was raised to 31. For the three remaining occurrences, HSTARs 6723, 6724, and 6725 were written.
