HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2239 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/28/98 - 0000Z (UTC) 10/29/98 Daily Status Report as of 302/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7948 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to Dec. 98) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was to be used to measure CCD dark current and bias rates for the two supported amplifier settings {GAIN=1 and GAIN=4} in order to gather data for making superdarks and superbiases. The data will be used to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. As described in HSTAR 6741 and yesterday's report, the re-acquisition for both iterations of this proposal failed, and the take data flag remained down. 1.2 Completed Six Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7963 (Darks: Warming Up) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to monitor the detector dark current during the interval between the end of science observations and the exhaustion of cryogen and subsequent warming of the dewar to > 100K. As described in HSTAR 6741 and yesterday's report, the re-acquisition for the first iteration of this proposal failed, and the take data flag remained down. Otherwise, the observations were completed as planned, and no further anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt3/3) The WF/PC-2 was to be used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. As described in HSTAR 6741 and yesterday's report, the re-acquisition for this proposal failed, and the take data flag remained down. 1.4 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7898 (Snapshot Survey of Proto-planetary Nebulae) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to make snapshot survey observations of the protoplanetary nebula IRAS17347. This is to help discern the structure of the nebulae and the evolutionary sequence that produces axially symmetric planetary nebulae. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 7431 (Snapshot Survey of Microlensed Source Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey images of microlensed source star MACHO-119. Gravitational microlensing surveys have revealed an excess of lensing events over theoretical predictions toward both the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Galactic Bulge. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed NIC/2 7897 (Probing Planetary Formation Around Main-Sequence Stars: A Snapshot Survey) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make snapshort survey images of the main sequence stars HR3927 and HR3720 probing for planetary formation. The IR excess main-sequence stars host cool circumstellar dust disks, which are most likely replenished by the debris of unseen planetesimals. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6776 (A Comparative HST Imaging Study of Radio Galaxies and Hosts) A clear understanding of the nature of the host galaxies of radio-quiet quasars, radio-loud quasars and radio galaxies is of central importance in any attempt to unify and relate the three main classes of powerful active galaxies. Existing HST studies of quasar hosts, whilst producing many interesting new results, have yielded surprisingly little hard information on the properties of the hosts themselves. This imaging study using the WF/PC-2 will remedy this situation by undertaking redder, line-free observations of matched AGN V1500-Cyg. The proposal completed with no reported problems. 1.8 Completed Eleven Sets of STIS/CCD 8084 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation II) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make non-scripted parallel high galactic latitude observations as part of POMS test proposal. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6632 (Morphologies of High Redshifted Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the high redshifted radio galaxy Gal-2106-2 in order to study its morphology. This is part of a study of the continuum and Lyman-Alpha morphologies of 20 high redshifted radio galaxies which was begun in Cycle 5. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of NIC/2/3 8082 (NICMOS pure parallel Fall 98) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to make pure parallel observations while another instrument is prime. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of NIC/2/3 8063 (NICMOS Pure Parallel Sponge - Backup) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras Two and Three) was used to make observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. This proposal is PRE-the new FOM default. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7826 (Near-IR Photometry of M-31's Metal-Rich Globular Clusters) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) were used to make observations of the metal-rich globular clusters located in Baades Window. The high metallicities of the program clusters will make these observations of particular interest for furthering our understanding of the evolution of metal rich stars, and for the population synthesis models meant to study the stellar content of distant, unresolvable bulges and elliptical galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed NIC/3 7901 (NICMOS Post-Campaign Focus Monitoring) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Three) was used to make some post-campaign focus monitoring observations by using star cluster NGC-3603. This proposal is used to determine and monitor the optimal focus and tilt settings for all three NICMOS cameras after the first NIC/3 observing campaign. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed Two Sets of NIC/2 7226 (Search for Massive Jupiters) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to make a corographic search for massive planets around nearby, young main sequence stars. Because of the extreme youth of these objects, any low-mass brown dwarf and planetary companions will still be in a higher luminosity phase and thus easily detectable. A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled with no anomalies. 1.15 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7909 (POMS Test Proposal: WF II Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make parallel observations as part of the POMS test proposal. This test proposal is designed to simulate scientific plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7336 (Cosmological Parameters Omega and Lambda From High-Redshift Type Ia Supernovae) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One, Two and Three) was used to make observations of the high redshifted Type Ia supernova SN97226. HST can make a direct measurement of the cosmological parameters, Omega, Lambda, and curvature, using Type Ia supernovae as calibrated "standard candles."
