` HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2267 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 12/09/98 - 0000Z (UTC) 12/10/98 Daily Status Report as of 344/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 8084 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make non-scripted parallel high galactic latitude observations as part of POMS test proposal. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt3/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed STIS/CCD 7948 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to Dec. 98) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to measure CCD dark current and bias rates for the two supported amplifier settings {GAIN=1 and GAIN=4} in order to gather data for making superdarks and superbiases. The data will be used to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Eleven Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7963 (Darks: Warming Up) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to monitor the detector dark current during the interval between the end of science observations and the exhaustion of cryogen and subsequent warming of the dewar to > 100K. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 7376 (Understanding Halo Microlensing and Variable Stars in M31: 1} Snapshot Survey of Candidates) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy M-31-Lens system to help understand its halo microlensing and Variable Stars. Six microlensing candidates affecting stars in M31 and presumably due to sub-solar-mass MACHOs are being studied. Simultaneously we can explored the stellar population in the relatively unexplored disk/bulge transition via its variable stars, luminosity function and color-magnitude diagram. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed STIS/CCD 7464 (The Evolution of Massive Stars as a Function of Metallicity: Closing the Loop Observationally) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the giant OB class star M-33-OB78 which is located in the M-33 galaxy. The galaxies of the Local Group provide the laboratories for testing how massive stars evolve as a function of metallicity. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Three Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7961 (Flats: Warming Up) The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to monitor the flat fields during the interval between the end of science observations and the exhaustion of cryogen and subsequent warming of the dewar to > 100K. These flats will provide a monitor for particulate comtamination and detector lateral position {from the coronagraphic spot and FDA vignetting}. The proposal completed with no reported problems. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 8059 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-2 Targeted Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations in parallel with the prime science observations. The parallel opportunities available with WF/PC-2 in the neighborhood of bright galaxies are treated in a slightly different way from the normal pure parallels. Local group galaxies offer the opportunity for a closer look at young stellar populations. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed Six Sets of WF/PC-2 7620 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Standard Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 7 standard dark calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains dark frames every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8061 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Backup Parallel Archive Proposal) This is a POMS test proposal designed to simulate scientific plans. The proposal was executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6681 (Evolution of Pre-Main Sequence Circumstellar Nebulosity) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of DO-Tau to study the evolution of pre-main sequence circumstellar nebulosity. Initial HST results from imaging of disks around pre-main sequence stars provide compelling justification to observe a broader sample of young stars. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8062 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make low galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges of Spiral Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of spiral galaxy NGC-972 in order to study their central bulges. The aim is to investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or miscentered nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed STIS/MA1 7397 (Probing the 230 MG Accreting Magnetic White Dwarf in AR Ursae Majoris) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make observations of the 230 Mega-Gauss Accreting Magnetic white dwarf in AR-Ursae Majoris (a.k.a., Aruma). Evidence for a strong magnetic field on the primary star comes from several lines of evidence, however the quantitative estimate of B~230 MG is based on the identification of the photospheric Lyman-Alpha Sigma+ Zeeman component with an absorption feature in the low-state IUE spectrum. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7909 (POMS Test Proposal: WF II Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make parallel observations as part of the POMS test proposal. This test proposal is designed to simulate scientific plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7233 (Dust Disks Around Main Sequence Stars) The Near Infrared Camera (Camera One, Two and Three) was used to make observations of the dust disk around main sequence star HD98800. The observations were made with the coronagraph to minimize the effects of glare from the bright central star. A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.17 Completed FOC/96 6349 (Snapshot search for High Redshift QSOs with Far-UV Flux) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make snapshot images of the quasi-stellar object Q0207-399. This is to determine if this high redshifted object has a far ultraviolet flux. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 13 Successful : 12 As documented in HSTAR 6804, the acquisition scheduled for 344/085406Z failed even though previous full mode FHST updates had acceptable attitude vector errors. Two proposals, WF/PC-2 6967 and STIS 8062, which occurred during the period of the next report were affected. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 27 Successful : 27 2.3 Operations Notes: The SSR EDAC error counter was cleared three times per ROP SR-1.
