HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2327 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/11/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/12/99 Daily Status Report as of 071/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt3/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7948 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to Dec. 98) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to measure CCD dark current and bias rates for the two supported amplifier settings {GAIN=1 and GAIN=4} in order to gather data for making superdarks and superbiases. The data will be used to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6357 (The Nuclear Morphology of Elliptical Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the early type, large, elliptical galaxy NGC-3266 (taken from a list of 150 galaxies) in order to study its nuclear morphology. This survey will complement Illingworth's snapshot study of later Hubble types. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7343 (Photometric Survey of Galaxies lying Behind Gravitational Lens Cluster) The WF/PC-2 was used to make an extensive photometric survey of the galaxies lying behind the exceptional gravitational lens cluster A2218. The distortion of these images has been mapped from the ground, and shows one of the strongest signals to date, but the signal to noise is still limited. Using WFPC2 images we show that with two orbits on each of 22 fields covering the cluster we will obtain approximately 10000 galaxies over a region extending to 0.9 Mpc/h from the cluster center. The observations were completed with no reported problems. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8091 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude, non-scripted, parallel observations. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed STIS/CCD 8393 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation IV) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make POMS, non-scripted, low galactic latitude observations made in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed STIS/MA2 7950 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark Measurements) 30[10] The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make a dark calibration image. This is to establish if the detectors are performing nominally, that no internal movement of the MCP has taken place, and establish dark level in orbit for a given operating temperature. These darks will be used in later image reduction and also trended over instrument life time as indicators of detector degradation or damage. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 7403 (Measuring Black Hole Masses in Broad-Lined AGNs) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of broad-lined active galactic nuclei (AGN) located in galaxy NGC-3245. Broad emission lines in AGNs are considered one of the most direct signatures of a large central mass, which is presumed to be a black hole. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6356 (SNAPSHOT Survey of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy Gal-073810 as part of a survey of ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The nature of ultraluminous infrared galaxies has generated considerable controversy. The two main issues are: {1} are they powered by violent bursts of star formation or by hidden quasars? {2} are interactions and mergers invariably involved? The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 7342 (The Most Powerful Gravitational Lens) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations one of the most powerful gravitational lens systems in Gal-Clus-1732 (Near the quasar pair PC1643+4631 A,B). This is the first high-redshift structure to be detected by observations of the microwave background. The observations were completed as planed, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed STIS/CCD 8081 (STIS CCD Hot Pixel Annealing [2- II) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a dark and a bias calibration observation. The effectiveness of the CCD hot pixel annealing process is assessed by measuring the dark current behavior before and after annealing and by searching for any window contamination effects. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 7622 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Internal Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Cycle 7 internal monitoring calibration measurements. A variety of internal exposures are obtained in order to provide a monitor of the integrity of the CCD camera electronics in both bays {gain 7 and gain 15}, a test for quantum efficiency in the CCDs, and a monitor for possible buildup of contaminants on the CCD windows. A bias calibration and an internal flat calibration image were also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 15 Successful : 15 2.3 Operations Notes: The SSR EDAC error counter was cleared twice using ROP SR-1. An SMAC01 +E SPA trim relay patch was uplinked successfully at 070/1505Z. Prior to this patch, at software sunpoint safemode entry, SMAC01 closed all SPA trim realys and reduced spacecraft loads, potentially leading to battery over-heating. This patch inhibits the closure of the +E SPA trim relay during this type of entry into safemode. TTRs were filed for two unrecoverable 32K data losses due to GCMR problems: one for one-minute, 47-seconds beginning at 070/1640Z and the other for 4-minutes, 10-seconds beginning at 070/2113Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
