HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2333 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/18/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 03/22/99 Daily Status Report as of 081/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8393 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation IV) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make POMS, non-scripted, low galactic latitude observations made in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt3/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 7339 (Sizes and Structures of Faint Blue Compact Galaxies that are New Candidates for Proto-Spheroidal Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain two-band WFPC-2 images the faint blue compact galaxy LYN2-10083 at redshifts up to z ~ 0.7, that are excellent new candidates for being spheroidal galaxies, caught in the act of undergoing a major star-forming event. The observations completed with no reported anomalies. 1.4 Completed Nine Sets of STIS/CCD 8091 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude, non-scripted, parallel observations. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 7431 (Snapshot Survey of Microlensed Source Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey images of microlensed source star 97-BLG-15. Gravitational microlensing surveys have revealed an excess of lensing events over theoretical predictions toward both the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Galactic Bulge. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6554 (Extragalactic Globular Cluster Systems) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of a extragalactic globular cluster system which is located in galaxy NGC-3309. This is part of a survey which will cover a range in galaxy luminosity, morphological type, environment, galactic cluster specific frequency and galactic cluster mean metallicity. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1 7432 (Morphological and Spectral Evolution of Galaxies) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) were used to make observations to study the morphological and spectral evolution of the galaxy 3C89-3. A library of ultraviolet images of normal galaxies at low redshifts is essential to our understanding of the properties and evolution of the high redshift universe. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6659 (A Search For Superplanets Around Weak T- Tauri Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations in the 1 micron band of the T-Tauri class star HBC374 in order to search for superplanets. Weak T-Tauri class stars are thought to have dissipated their circumstellar disks recently, possibly by forming planetary systems. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed Seven Sets of WF/PC-2 6357 (The Nuclear Morphology of Elliptical Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the early type, large, elliptical galaxies NGC-2634, NGC-5283, NGC-4125, NGC-3348, NGC-6278, NGC-5903 and NGC-5576 (taken from a list of 150 galaxies) in order to study its nuclear morphology. This survey will complement Illingworth's snapshot study of later Hubble types. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 7386 (A Snapshot Survey of Nova Shells) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observational images of the super nova shell V705-Cas in order to detect and measure its expanding gaseous shell. These observations will trace the distribution of hot and cool gas in the nova shells, and show their degree of inhomogeneity on both large and small scales. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/CCD 7615 (Determination of the Mass Function of a Globular Cluster Through Gravitational Microlensing) The WF/PC-2 and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) were used to make gravitational microlensing observations of the large globular cluster NGC-6656 located in Sagittarius in order to study its mass function. Gravitational microlensing offers a unique and direct method of determining the masses of stars and other compact objects down to planetary masses. A bias and dark calibration observations were also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6824 (PC Imaging of HH29: The Nearest Interstellar Shock) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of HH29 which is the nearest interstellar shock front. High resolution imaging of HH objects associated with stellar jets allows us to investigate the interaction zone where the jet impacts the surrounding medium, the resulting shock structures that are formed, and the temporal behavior of the jet itself. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed STIS/MA1 7298 (A Snapshot Survey for UV bright Quasars at redshift below 3) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make ultraviolet snapshot observations of the bright quasar CSO151 which has a redshift (Z) below 3.0. The goal is to find quasars bright enough in the ultraviolet for spectroscopic follow-up in the range of 900-1200 Angstroms. A wave length calibration image was also taken. The observation were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7361 (The Nature of Nuclear Activity in Nearby Galaxies) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the nuclear region of galaxies N5055 and N4143. The high resolution spectra will be used to search for broad components in H-Alpha and for velocity gradients, indicative of gas rotation or other ordered motions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 7384 (Probing the Fine-Scale Structure and Colors of Interstellar "Cirrus" Clouds) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the nebula NEB-162539 in order to probe the fine-scale structure and colors of interstellar "cirrus" clouds. The ubiquitous nature of Galactic "cirrus" clouds make them both: {1} accessible targets for the study of the properties of interstellar dust grains, and {2} sources of confusion in investigations of distant objects {e.g. galaxies, clusters of galaxies} at low surface brightness levels. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 6355 (A UV Atlas of Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the nearby galaxies NGC-3516 and NGC-1744. The aim of the project is to build a reference ultraviolet atlas of galaxies whose optical images are well known, with the highest possible degree of information, covering all the morphological types and luminosity classes. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 6815 (The Origin of the Polarization in the Gravitationally Lensed "Cloverleaf" BAL QSO) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain polarimetry that will explore the polarization mechanism operating in the gravitationally lensed "Cloverleaf" broad absorption line {BAL} QSO G191B2B. The observations were completed, and there were no reported anomalous activity. 1.19 Completed WF/PC-2 7377 (Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy Snapshot Survey II) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the dwarf elliptical galaxy VCC2634 as part of Snapshot Survey II. This survey will provide important information on the globular cluster systems of such galaxies and the properties of their cores and nuclei. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.20 Completed WF/PC-2 6791 (The Collisional Debris of NGC 4438) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the collisional debris in galaxy NGC-4438. This system is the nearest example of a recent and close high-velocity collision between two large galaxies, and offers a unique opportunity to learn about the physical processes in high-velocity collisions which can transform cluster galaxies. SI C&DH errors were reset twice using ROP NS-5. ROP RD-4 was used to manually record data on the engineering tape recorder.
