HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2341 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 03/31/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 04/01/99 Daily Status Report as of 091/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6347 (A Search for Jets in Planetary Nebulae) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planetary nebulae (class PNe) IC4593 in order to search for the presence of possible narrow jets. The current model for PNe formation indicates that jets are an unexpected phenomena, yet there is a growing body of circumstantial evidence that suggests narrow jets are common feature in PNe. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Six Sets of STIS/CCD 8091 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude, non-scripted, parallel observations. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt3/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7949 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to June 99) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a CCD dark calibration and a bias monitoring program. It was also scheduled to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed STIS/CCD/MA2 7394 (Mass Loss in Globular Cluster Giants: NGC 6752) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD/MA2) was used to make observations of the giant globular cluster NGC-6752 to study its mass loss. Uncertainty in the amount of mass lost by a low-mass, old, metal-poor stars as it evolves up the giant branch for the first time is one of the most significant impediments to the interpretation of globular-cluster color-magnitude diagrams. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6356 (SNAPSHOT Survey of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy GAL-185205 as part of a survey of ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The nature of ultraluminous infrared galaxies has generated considerable controversy. The two main issues are: {1} are they powered by violent bursts of star formation or by hidden quasars? {2} are interactions and mergers invariably involved? The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 7436 (A Complete Sample of Hot Post-AGB Stars in Globular Clusters) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the globular cluster NGC-6752-B2. Recent observations with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope have provided a complete sample of the hot post asymptotic giant branch {post-AGB} population in fourteen globular clusters. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 7495 (Survey of Gravitational Lenses as Cosmological Tools) The WF/PC-2 was used to make survey observations of object PG1115+080 by obtaining deep, high-resolution images in the optical and near IR in order to see if it is gravitational lensed and could be used as a cosmological tool. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8053 (WF/PC-2 Cycle-7 Earth Flats -- Part II) The WF/PC-2 was used to take Earth flat calibration images. This proposal obtains sequences of Earth streak flats to construct high quality flat fields for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed FOC/96 6349 (Snapshot Search for High Redshift QSOs with Far-UV Flux) The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make snapshot images of the quasi-stellar object Q1159+124. This is to determine if this high redshifted object has a far ultraviolet flux. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6770 (Resolving the Nature of Nova Shells) The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the post nova remnant V842-Cen in order to study its surrounding shells structure. Past data has indicate a strong correlation between nova speed class and the ellipticity of the resulting remnants. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were noted. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6358 (UV Imaging of Circumnuclear Starburst Rings) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet snapshot observations of galaxy NGC-7552 in order to study its circumnuclear starburst rings. A homogeneous database of properties of the star-forming region will be generated. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed STIS/CCD 7475 (The Chemical Content of the Universe at Z< 1.6) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the background quasar Field-1251. Damped Lyman-Alpha absorption systems provide a means of directly probing the chemical content of the deep universe. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. HSTARs 7079 and 7080 were written for scheduling errors in the PASS software now being run at the STScI. Manual intervention corrected the problems which would have occurred in the upcoming week. A TTR was written for an unrecoverable loss of 4kb engineering data from 090/1854Z until 090/1857Z due to an NCC problem. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
