HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2364 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/03/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/04/99 Daily Status Report as of 124/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt3/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed STIS/CCD 7949 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to June 99) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a CCD dark calibration and a bias monitoring program. It was also scheduled to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges of Spiral Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of spiral galaxy NGC-2775 in order to study its central bulges. The aim is to investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or miscentered nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed STIS/CCD 8172 (STIS Deep DLA Imaging Survey II) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make deep observations of quasar/alpha galaxy Q1223+1753. The HST imaging together with ground-based spectroscopy will unify absorption-line studies and faint galaxy imaging studies, providing a comprehensive picture of the history of assembly, star formation, gas consumption, and chemical enrichment in the Damped Lyman-Alpha galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 8053 (WF/PC-2 Cycle-7 Earth Flats -- Part II) The WF/PC-2 was used to take Earth flat calibration images. This proposal obtains sequences of Earth streak flats to construct high quality flat fields for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 7279 (The Impact of Cluster Substructure on Galaxies: A Case Study in ABELL 2125) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the Abell-2125 galactic cluster (a.k.a., the Butcher-Oemler Cluster) in order to study the impact of the substructure of the cluster on galaxies. The VLA data show that, as well as a large blue-galaxy fraction {0.19} for its redshift, it has an unprecedented number of radio galaxies {30 with confirmed redshifts}, evenly split between old stellar populations and starbursting galaxies. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD 8393 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation IV) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make POMS, non-scripted, low galactic latitude observations made in parallel with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 7628 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Photometric Characterization) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of GRW+70D582 as part of a photometric characterization calibration observation. This is to determine whether any changes in the zeropoint, the spatial dependence of the zeropoint, or contamination rates have occurred. The observation was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed STIS/CCD 8081 (STIS CCD Hot Pixel Annealing) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a dark and a bias calibration observation. The effectiveness of the CCD hot pixel annealing process is assessed by measuring the dark current behavior before and after annealing and by searching for any window contamination effects. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6358 (UV Imaging of Circumnuclear Starburst Rings) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet snapshot observations of galaxy NGC-4314 in order to study its circumnuclear starburst rings. A homogeneous database of properties of the star-forming region will be generated. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7343 (Photometric Survey of Galaxies lying Behind Gravitational Lens Cluster) The WF/PC-2 was used to make an extensive photometric survey of the galaxies lying behind the exceptional gravitational lens cluster A2218. The distortion of these images has been mapped from the ground, and shows one of the strongest signals to date, but the signal to noise is still limited. Using WFPC2 images we show that with two orbits on each of 22 fields covering the cluster we will obtain approximately 10000 galaxies over a region extending to 0.9 Mpc/h from the cluster center. The loss of lock mentioned in 2.1 and documented in HSTAR 7118, occurred during the first iteration of this proposal, near the end of this seven-hour proposal. Otherwise, the observations were completed with no further reported problems. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 4 Successful : 4 As documented in HSTAR 7118, there was a loss of lock at 123/1832Z. The proposal described in 1.12 was affected. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 6 Successful : 6 2.3 Operations Notes: The operations team continues its stay in the SAMS back-up facility.
