HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2372 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/13/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/14/99 Daily Status Report as of 134/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7281 (Snapshot Survey of the B2 Sample of Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the B2 sample radio galaxies B2+1512+30 and B2+1557+26. This program is aimed to answer the following key questions: How common are extended nuclear disks? What is their orientation and morphology? How common are optical jets? The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed STIS/CCD 7949 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to June 99) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a CCD dark calibration and a bias monitoring program. It was also scheduled to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7713 (WF/P-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt3/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 7495 (Survey of Gravitational Lenses as Cosmological Tools) The WF/PC-2 was used to make survey observations of object MG0751+271 by obtaining deep, high-resolution images in the optical and near IR in order to see if it is gravitational lensed and could be used as a cosmological tool. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 7622 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Internal Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Cycle 7 internal monitoring calibration measurements. A variety of internal exposures are obtained in order to provide a monitor of the integrity of the CCD camera electronics in both bays {gain 7 and gain 15}, a test for quantum efficiency in the CCDs, and a monitor for possible buildup of contaminants on the CCD windows. A bias calibration and an internal flat calibration image were also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 7409 (Resolving sdB Binary Systems) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations to try to resolve the sdB class binary system Star-15122. This is a continuation of the approved Cycle 6 Proposal No. 6351, which due to unlucky circumstances did not succeed in obtaining any data until 8/30/96. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed STIS/MA1/MA2 8201 (Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1 and MA2) was used to make ultraviolet observations of the ultra-luminous infrared galaxy IRAS13428. Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies are the most luminous galaxies known in the local universe, and are predominantly powered by massive star formation. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 7306 (Halo Microlens Source Systems and their Underlying Stellar Backgrounds) The WF/PC-2 was to be used to to obtain medium-deep broadband images of source STAR-0517 looking for microlensing events, plus one additional star, to determine a} which star was actually lensed, b} the amount of crowding in our ground-based frames, c} if the stars are normal in the CMD, and d} if they lie preferentially at the back of the LMC. As explained in 2.1, 2.2 and HSTAR 7128, the full maneuver updates and the acquisition before this proposal failed, affecting six observations as the take data flag remained down. 1.10 Completed Five Sets of STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. As explained in 2.1, 2.2 and HSTAR 7128, the full maneuver updates and the acquisition before the first iteration of this proposal failed, affecting one observation as the take data flag remained down. Otherwise, the observations were completed as scheduled, and no further anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed STIS/CCD 8470 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was to be used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition VI proposal. As explained in 2.1, 2.2 and HSTAR 7128, the full maneuver updates and the acquisition before this proposal failed, affecting one observation as the take data flag remained down. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6833 (A Cepheid Search in the Virgo Cluster Galaxy NGC 4571) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the Virgo Cluster galaxy NGC-4571 in order to search for Cepheid variable stars. The determination of the distance to the Virgo Cluster is key to establishing the value of the H_zero. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6798 (The Early Evolution of Local Group Dwarf Irregular Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to determine whether the gas-containing dwarf irregular galaxy know as WLM in the Local Group has significant population of very ancient stars of age comparable to Population II stars in the Galaxy, and if so, whether the properties of this old population vary with the parent galaxy type. The proposal completed with no reported problems. 1.14 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7912 (STIS Parallel Archive Proposal - Nearby Galaxies - Imaging and Spectroscopy) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make parallel observations of nearby galaxies. This survey will be useful to study the star formation histories, chemical evolution, and distances to these galaxies. These data will be placed immediately into the Hubble Data Archive. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 5 Successful : 4 Per HSTAR 7128, following two full maneuver update failures the acquisition at 133/105500Z failed when the search radius limit was exceeded on FGS-3. The proposals described in 1.9, 1.10, and 1.11 were affected by these failures. Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7 Successful : 7 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 13 Successful : 10 Per HSTAR 7128, the full maneuver updates at 133/102058Z and at 133/102343Z failed, causing the following acquisition to fail. The roll delay update at 133/150403Z failed due to FHST-3. The attitude was good, the HST was still on guide stars, and the full maneuver updates following were successful. 2.3 Operations Notes: The operations team continues its residence in the SAMS back-up facility using the PRS ground system. Using ROP SR-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared three times. An SI C&DH error was reset at 133/2106Z per ROP NS-5. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
