HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2379 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/24/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/25/99 Daily Status Report as of 145/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7620 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Standard Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 7 standard dark calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains dark frames every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD/MA1 7437 (Understanding High-Redshift and Starburst Galaxies: A UV Spectroscopic Survey of O-Stars in the SMC) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to make ultraviolet spectrographic observations of galaxies AV220 and AV75. The data from this survey, of importance in many areas of astrophysics, will immediately be made public as no proprietary period is requested. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7949 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to June 99) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a CCD dark calibration and a bias monitoring program. It was also scheduled to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 8059 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-2 Targeted Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations in parallel with the prime science observations. The parallel opportunities available with WF/PC-2 in the neighborhood of bright galaxies are treated in a slightly different way from the normal pure parallels. Local group galaxies offer the opportunity for a closer look at young stellar populations. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6833 (A Cepheid Search in the Virgo Cluster Galaxy NGC 4571) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the Virgo Cluster galaxy NGC-4571 in order to search for Cepheid variable stars. The determination of the distance to the Virgo Cluster is key to establishing the value of the H_zero. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of STIS/MA1/MA2 7950 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1 and MA2) was used to make a dark calibration image. This is to establish if the detectors are performing nominally, that no internal movement of the MCP has taken place, and establish dark level in orbit for a given operating temperature. These darks will be used in later image reduction and also trended over instrument life time as indicators of detector degradation or damage. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 7281 (Snapshot Survey of the B2 Sample of Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the B2 sample radio galaxies B2+1113+24 and B2+1101+38. This program is aimed to answer the following key questions: How common are extended nuclear disks? What is their orientation and morphology? How common are optical jets? The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 7495 (Survey of Gravitational Lenses as Cosmological Tools) The WF/PC-2 was used to make survey observations of object FSC10214+4 by obtaining deep, high-resolution images in the optical and near IR in order to see if it is gravitationally lensed and could be used as a cosmological tool. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 7408 (Parallax, Proper Motion, and Spectral Energy Distribution of an Isolated Old Neutron Star) The WF/PC-2 was used to study the parallax, proper motion, and spectral energy distribution of the old neutron star RXJ185635. The target is a bright soft X-ray source in the direction of the R CrA molecular cloud. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed STIS/CCD 8111 (CS 22892--052: A Rosetta Star for the Age and Early History of the Galaxy) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the "Rosetta" star CS 22892-052. These observations should provide significant new information about the early history of the galaxy, specifically the nature of the earliest generations of stars and the types of nucleosynthetic processes that occurred in those stars.
