HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2389 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/08/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/09/99 Daily Status Report as of 160/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images. This set of calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 7282 (A Continuing Snapshot Survey for Compact Stellar Groups and Clusters around Wolf-Rayet Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the Wolf-Rayet star WR37 as part of a continuing snapshot survey of compact stellar groups and clusters. The newly-imaged clusters allow us to accurately determine the distances, luminosities, and ages of the WR members. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Four Sets of STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make Low galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7949 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to June 99) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a CCD dark calibration and a bias monitoring program. It was also scheduled to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed STIS/CCD 8189 (The Source of Gamma Ray Bursts and the Nature of their Hosts) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high resolution optical and ultraviolet observations of the Gamma Ray Burster (GRB) 990510 and its host galaxy. This comprehensive set of observations will provide new insights into the astrophysics of GRBs and their high redshift host galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed STIS/MA1 7950 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make a dark calibration image. This is to establish if the detectors are performing nominally, that no internal movement of the MCP has taken place, and establish dark level in orbit for a given operating temperature. These darks will be used in later image reduction and also trended over instrument life time as indicators of detector degradation or damage. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 8405 (Hubble Heritage Observations of Jupiter) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planet Jupiter and its Great Red Spot. These observations are proposed as part of the Hubble Heritage program. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6356 (SNAPSHOT Survey of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy Gal-174310 as part of a survey of ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The nature of ultraluminous infrared galaxies has generated considerable controversy. The two main issues are: {1} are they powered by violent bursts of star formation or by hidden quasars? {2} are interactions and mergers invariably involved? The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6354 (Measuring Luminosity Evolution in Z = 0.3 Field Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the galactic cluster Gal-Cluster-0127 located at a distance of Z = 0.3. The targets were drawn from a much larger pool of galaxies for which the internal kinematics have been measured from an extensive ground based program. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed STIS/CCD 8080 (STIS Spectroscopic CCD Flatfielding -- Revised) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make CCD flat fielding calibration observations in the spectroscopic mode. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6967 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio - Continued Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the radio galaxy 3C434.0. Radio galaxies are an important class of extragalactic objects: they represent one of the most energetic astrophysical phenomena and they may be used as probes of their environments. They are unique probes of the early Universe. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed STIS/CCD/WF/PC-2 7388 (Black Holes and the Centers of Galaxies) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) and the WF/PC-2 were used to continue our survey of the center of nearby galaxy NGC-4649. The major goal is to survey an unbiased set of galaxies with a potentially wide range of black hole masses. The sample has been carefully chosen to optimize leverage on the character of a proposed correlation of black hole mass with galaxy mass. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as scheduled with no anomalies. 1.14 Completed STIS/MA1 7298 (A Snapshot Survey for UV Bright Quasars at Redshift Below 3) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make ultraviolet snapshot observations of the bright quasar CSO100 which has a redshift (Z) below 3.0. The goal is to find quasars bright enough in the ultraviolet for spectroscopic follow-up in the range of 900-1200 Angstroms. A wave length calibration image was also taken. The observation were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1/MA2 7773 (Simultaneous Multiwavelength Observations of the Dwarf Nova Oscillations of SS Cygni) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD, MA1 and MA2) was used to make simultaneous multiwavelength observations oscillations of the dwarf nova SS-Cygni. We attempted a multiwavelength campaign using RXTE, EUVE, HST, and ground-based optical telescopes to characterize the dwarf nova oscillations of SS Cygni. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 10 Successful : 10 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8 Successful : 8 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 24 Successful : 24 2.3 Operations Notes: Upon the conclusion of GSFC Internal Simulation #5 (Rendezvous/Capture), the HST operations team returned to the STOCC area at 160/0527Z. The PRS ground system is still being used. Using ROP SR-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared six times. The ephemeris was uplinked, dumped and compared at 159/1040Z per ROP DF-7. As directed by ROP SR-3, the SSR pointer was set twice. The STIS MCE-2 reset twice, at 159/171539Z and at 160/040822Z. In each case, the low voltage was on and the HST was in an SAA interval. Per ROP NS-12, the STIS flight software error counter was reset after each occurrence. In the first case, MAMA-2 was recovered via normal SMS commanding; in the second, recovery will occur this afternoon via SMS commanding. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
