HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2394 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/15/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/16/99 Daily Status Report as of 167/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 7949 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor -- Cont. to June 99) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a CCD dark calibration and a bias monitoring program. It was also scheduled to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7712 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks pt2/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 7 supplemental calibration darks. This dark calibration program obtains three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Five Sets of STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 7431 (Snapshot Survey of Microlensed Source Stars) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey images of microlensed source star MACHO-95-1. Gravitational microlensing surveys have revealed an excess of lensing events over theoretical predictions toward both the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Galactic Bulge. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6967 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio - Continued Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the radio galaxy 3C63.0. Radio galaxies are an important class of extragalactic objects: they represent one of the most energetic astrophysical phenomena and they may be used as probes of their environments. They are unique probes of the early Universe. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 8490 (Confirmation of a Gravitational Microlensing Black Hole Candidate) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of MACHO-96-B as part of a confirmation of this object as a gravitational microlensing black hole candidate. This will help us test the black hole microlensing model. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8053 (WF/PC-2 Cycle-7 Earth Flats -- Part II) The WF/PC-2 was used to take Earth flat calibration images. This proposal obtains sequences of Earth streak flats to construct high quality flat fields for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6833 (A Cepheid Search in the Virgo Cluster Galaxy NGC 4571) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the Virgo Cluster galaxy NGC-4571 in order to search for Cepheid variable stars. The determination of the distance to the Virgo Cluster is key to establishing the value of the H_zero. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 8274 (A Size Survey of Cometary Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the comet Holmes as part of a size survey of cometary nuclei. This is part of a program to determine the basic physical properties of a large fraction of the population of short-period comets. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed FGS 8102 (FGS Astrometry of the Extrasolar Planet of GL876) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations of a extrasolar planet which is orbiting the M4 class dwarf star GL876. This will help determine the planet's mass. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/CCD 7615 (Determination of the Mass Function of a Globular Cluster Through Gravitational Microlensing) The WF/PC-2 and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) were used to make gravitational microlensing observations of the large globular cluster NGC-6656 located in Sagittarius in order to study its mass function. Gravitational microlensing offers a unique and direct method of determining the masses of stars and other compact objects down to planetary masses. A bias and dark calibration observations were also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed STIS/CCD 7285 (Collimation of Astrophysical Jets: The Proto-Planetary Nebula He 3-1475) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of proto-planetary nebula HE3-1475 in order to get a collimation of its astrophysical jets. Recent observations of this proto-planetary nebula in the N II Lambda 6584 A0 line with the HST WF/PC-2 have revealed what appear the be large scale flows being collimated into narrow bipolar jets. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 8441 (WF/PC-2 Decontaminations and Associated Observations Pt. 1/2) The WF/PC-2 was used to make its monthly decontamination operations. Also included are instrument monitors tied to decons: photometric stability check, focus monitor, pre- and post-decon internals {bias, internal flats, k-spots, & darks}, and ultraviolet throughput checks. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 9 Successful : 9 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 12 Successful : 12 2.3 Operations Notes: The SSR EDAC error counter was cleared three times per ROP SR-1. HSTAR 7173 describes several instances of marginally low out-of-limits states for batteries 3 and 4, occurring in the interval 166/0955Z to 166/0959Z, as the HST was at the end of an orbit night period. As directed by ROP NS-4, thge WF/PC-2 microprocessor was dumped at 167/0451Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
