HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2403 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/28/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/29/99 Daily Status Report as of 180/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6358 (UV Imaging of Circumnuclear Starburst Rings) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet snapshot observations of galaxies NGC-7469 and NGC-1097 in order to study its circumnuclear starburst rings. A homogeneous database of properties of the star-forming region will be generated. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 8442 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 8 Standard Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 8 standard dark calibration observations. This dark calibration program obtains dark frames every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 8210 (HST Imaging of Bi-Polar Proto-Planetary Nebulae and Circumstellar Arcs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bi-polar proto-planetary nebula IRAS16594. Proto-planetary nebulae provide the best opportunity to test theories of asymptotic giant branch mass loss {symmetric/asymmetric, continuous/episodic} and the processes which shape planetary nebulae. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed STIS/CCD 8081 (STIS CCD Hot Pixel Annealing) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a dark and a bias calibration observation. The effectiveness of the CCD hot pixel annealing process is assessed by measuring the dark current behavior before and after annealing and by searching for any window contamination effects. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 8195 (The Stellar Halo and the Metallicity Distribution Function in the Giant Elliptical NGC 5128) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC-5128 in order to study its stellar halo and the metallicity distribution function. Because this galaxy is 2 magnitudes closer than any other giant elliptical galaxy, it gives us a unique opportunity to study the enrichment history at a level of detail that is impossible for any other such galaxy. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed Three Sets of STIS/MA1/MA2 7950 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1 and MA2) was used to make a dark calibration image. This is to establish if the detectors are performing nominally, that no internal movement of the MCP has taken place, and establish dark level in orbit for a given operating temperature. These darks will be used in later image reduction and also trended over instrument life time as indicators of detector degradation or damage. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8445 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 8 Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Cycle 8 Earth flat calibration observations. This is to obtain sequences of earth streak flats to construct high quality flat fields for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed STIS/CCD/MA2 8225 (Absorption and Obscuration in Radio-Loud Quasars) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to make observations of the radio-loud quasar MRC1208-27. The role of associated absorption systems and dust obscuration close to the central engines of AGN is not understood. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges of Spiral Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of spiral galaxies NGC-3084 in order to study their central bulges. The aim is to investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or miscentered nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed STIS/MA1 7308 (HST FAR-UV Imaging and Spectra of Jupiter's Aurora Coordinated With Galileo) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make far-ultraviolet imaging and spectral observations of the aurora near both poles of the planet Jupiter at the same time as scheduled GALILEO spacecraft measurements of Jupiter's magnetospheric properties and ultraviolet emissions over summer/fall 1997. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of X-Ray Selected AGNs) The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the known low red shifted x-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) MS2307.9-4. These data will allow a study of the optical properties of an unbiased sample of AGN host galaxies. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.16 Completed STIS/CCD 8419 (Deep Corongraphic PSF Calibration of STIS) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of standard star HD141653 in order to do a deep corongraphic Point Spread Function (PSF) calibration observations. This is to acquire a set of deep, coronographic images of isolated, point source stars with STIS for the purpose of correcting coronographic science observations for residual scattered light from the occulted object.
