HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2406 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 07/01/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 07/02/99 Daily Status Report as of 183/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 8444 (WF/PC-2 CYCLE-8 Internal Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a bias, and an internal flat, observation as part of a Cycle-8 monitoring program to monitor the health of the cameras. A variety of internal exposures are obtained in order to provide a monitor of the integrity of the CCD camera electronics in both bays {gain 7 and gain 15}, a test for quantum efficiency in the CCDs, and a monitor for possible buildup of contaminants on the CCD windows. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8081 (STIS CCD Hot Pixel Annealing) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a dark and a bias calibration observation. The effectiveness of the CCD hot pixel annealing process is assessed by measuring the dark current behavior before and after annealing and by searching for any window contamination effects. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6357 (The Nuclear Morphology of Elliptical Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was to be used to make images of the early type, large, elliptical galaxy NGC-3731 (taken from a list of 150 galaxies) in order to study its nuclear morphology. As described in HSTAR 7187 and yesterday’s report, the acquisition for this proposal failed and the take data flag remained down, affecting two observations. 1.4 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was to be used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This was to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. As described in HSTAR 7187 and yesterday’s report, the acquisition for this proposal failed and the take data flag remained down, affecting three observations. 1.5 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1 7345 (Origin and Physical Conditions in the Local Lyman-Alpha Forest) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to make observations of HE1029-140 in order to study the origin and physical conditions in the local Lyman-Alpha forest. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8445 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 8 Earth Flats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make Cycle 8 Earth flat calibration observations. This is to obtain sequences of earth streak flats to construct high quality flat fields for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8436 (POMS Test Proposal: WFII Backup Parallel Archive Proposal II) The WF/PC-2 was used to make archive observations parallel to the prime science observations as part of a POMS test proposal. This is a POMS test proposal designed to simulate scientific plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed STIS/CCD 7357 (Testing the Nature of “Type 2” Liners) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to observe the “Type 2” LINER galaxy NGC-3507. LINERs, like Seyferts, come in two varieties: “type 1” have broad permitted lines and “type 2” only have narrow lines. While LINER 1s undoubtedly are genuine AGNs, the true nature of LINER 2s remains unknown, although they make up most of the LINER population. The proposal completed with no reported problems. 1.10 Completed STIS/MA1 8424 (MAMA Sensitivity and Focus Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make observations of object AGK+81D266 in order to measure the sensitivity and to focus monitor C8. This also is to monitor sensitivity of each MAMA grating mode to detect any change due to contamination or other causes, and to monitor the STIS focus in a spectroscopic mode. A wavelength calibration was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed Four Sets of FGS 8102 (FGS Astrometry of the Extrasolar Planet of GL876) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations of a extrasolar planet which is orbiting the M4 class dwarf star GL876 and several other reference stars. This will help determine the planet’s mass. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.12 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.13 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 8407 (STIS CCD Performance Monitor {Cycle 8}) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to run a Cycle-8 CCD performance monitor program. This activity measures the baseline performance and commandability of the CCD subsystem. Only primary amplifier D is used. A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 6825 (Quantitative Measures of the Evolution of the Cluster Galaxy Population) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy MS1358+62E. The goal of this proposal is to understand the differential evolution of cluster and field galaxies over the redshift range 0.3 < Z < 0.6. A wave length calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.15 Completed STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.16 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8470 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition VI proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 12 Successful : 12 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 3 Successful : 3 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 25 Successful : 25 2.3 Operations Notes: Using ROP SR-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared twice.
