HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2413 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 07/13/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 07/14/99 Daily Status Report as of 195/0000Z 1.1 Completed Two Sets of STIS/MA2 8426 (Cycle 8 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make a routine Cycle-8 MAMA dark noise calibration measurement. This proposal will provide the primary means of checking on the health of the MAMA detectors. This is done through frequent monitoring of the background count rate. As described in HSTAR 7192 and yesterday’s report, the acquisition for second iteration of this proposal failed to RGA control, and the take data flag remained down. Otherwise, the observations were completed as planned, and no further problems were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 8442 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 8 Standard Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 8 standard dark calibration observations. This dark calibration program obtains dark frames every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD/MA1 7288 (High Resolution Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Hercules X-1/HZ Herculis) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to make ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the X-ray binary pulsar 4U1656+35 (a.k.a., Hercules X-1/HZ Herculis). A wavelength calibration observation was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 8441 (WF/PC-2 Decontaminations and Associated Observations Pt. 1/2) The WF/PC-2 was used to make its monthly decontamination operations. Also included are instrument monitors tied to decons: photometric stability check, focus monitor, pre- and post-decon internals {bias, internal flats, k-spots, and darks}, and ultraviolet throughput checks. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8053 (WF/PC-2 Cycle-7 Earth Flats -- Part II) The WF/PC-2 was used to take Earth flat calibration images. This proposal obtains sequences of Earth streak flats to construct high quality flat fields for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8443 (WF/PC-2 CYCLE-8 Supplemental Darks pt1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. As described in HSTAR 7192 and yesterday’s report, the acquisition for third iteration of this proposal failed to RGA control, and the take data flag remained down. Otherwise, the observations were completed as planned, and no further problems were reported. 1.8 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1 8241 (A Snapshot Survey of Interstellar Absorption Lines) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was to be used to make high resolution Echelle spectrographic observations of the standard ultraviolet star HD143807 as part of a snapshot survey of interstellar absorption lines. As described in HSTAR 7192 and yesterday’s report, the acquisition for this proposal failed to RGA control, and the take data flag remained down. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 8195 (The Stellar Halo and the Metallicity Distribution Function in the Giant Elliptical NGC 5128) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC-5126 in order to study its stellar halo and the metallicity distribution function. Because this galaxy is 2 magnitudes closer than any other giant elliptical galaxy, it gives us a unique opportunity to study the enrichment history at a level of detail that is impossible for any other such galaxy. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed Four Sets of STIS/CCD 7912 (STIS Parallel Archive Proposal - Nearby Galaxies - Imaging and Spectroscopy) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make parallel observations of nearby galaxies. This survey will be useful to study the star formation histories, chemical evolution, and distances to these galaxies. These data will be placed immediately into the Hubble Data Archive. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.13 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8412 (STIS CCD Imaging Flats C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to investigate the flat-field stability of the unit over a monthly period. A bias calibration observation was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.15 Completed STIS/CCD 8228 (The Black Hole Versus Bulge Mass Relationship in Spiral Galaxies) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4527 in order to study the black hole versus bulge mass relationship in spiral galaxies. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.16 Completed STIS/MA2 8275 (Ultraviolet Snapshots of 3CR Radio Source Counterparts at Low Z) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make ultraviolet snapshot observations of the radio galaxy 3C66.0B. Radio galaxies are an important class of extragalactic objects, representing one of the most energetic astrophysical phenomena, while extraordinarily useful as probes of their environments and of the early Universe. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions : 6 Successful : 6 Scheduled Reacquisitions : 12 Successful : 12 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled : 13 Successful : 13 2.3 Operations Notes: Using ROP SR-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared twice. The STIS flight software error counter was reset at 194/1021Z per ROP NS-12. This cleared problems associated with the acquisition failure affecting proposals 1.1 and 1.8 above. A TTR was written for engineering data loss from 194/1708Z until 194/171135Z when there was no GCMR capability. This was caused an NCC cold start problem. Another NCC software problem deleted 36 HST TDRS events from day 202 through day 206. Recovery of these events will be attempted after the NCC problem is resolved. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
