HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2432 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/09/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/10/99 Daily Status Report as of 222/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 8442 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 8 Standard Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 8 standard dark calibration observations. This dark calibration program obtains dark frames every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed STIS/CCD 8313 (Imaging the Host Galaxies of High Redshift Type Ia Supernovae) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of 9624 and its host galaxy. The propose is to obtain snapshot, unfiltered STIS images of distant galaxies of known redshift which have hosted supernovae {SNe} of Type IA found via the Supernova Cosmology Project. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed STIS/CCD 8042 (UV Imaging and Spectroscopy of High Excitation Herbig-Haro Objects) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make ultraviolet images and spectrographic observations of the high excitation Herbig-Haro object HD-163296. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 8216 (T Tauri Star Snapshot Survey II. Completing the CTTs Sample) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the T-Tauri class star known as Reipurth-4 as part of Snapshot Survey II. This database will be of fundamental importance to understanding the nature of planet-forming environments and their frequency in the galaxy. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8202 (Bright Quasar Close Lensing Search) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of HCLQ2150-3 and HCLQ1304+4 as part of a second generation survey to search for bright lensing quasars. With the restored PSF, new images will be considerably more sensitive to the presence of both close separation and faint lens components, and because STIS reaches two magnitudes fainter the PC, the new snapshot images will have much greater dynamic range. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 8310 (White Dwarf Distances to Globular Clusters and the RR-Lyrae Luminosity Calibration M-5.) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of NGC-5904 (a.k.a., M-5) in order to study its white dwarf and RR-Lyrae class starts. Despite the efforts of Hipparcos, the RR-Lyrae absolute magnitude calibration, M_V{RR}, remains uncertain at a level which critically compromises these stars' use as standard candles. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed STIS/CCD 7438 (Spatially-Resolved Spectroscopy of the UVX in Elliptical Galaxies) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make spatially resolved far-ultraviolet observations of the large elliptical galaxy NGC-221. The prominent far-UV upturn {UVX} in the spectra of elliptical galaxies originates from stars in their old populations which have evolved beyond the He-flash at the tip of the red giant branch. A wavelength calibration image and a bias measurement were also taken. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 8441 (WF/PC-2 Decontaminations and Associated Observations Pt. 1/2) 10> The WF/PC-2 was used to make its monthly decontamination operations. Also included are instrument monitors tied to decons: photometric stability check, focus monitor, pre- and post-decon internals {bias, internal flats, k-spots, and darks}, and ultraviolet throughput checks. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed STIS/CCD 8271 (A Snapshot Survey of LMC Planetary Nebulae: A Study of Nebular and Late Stellar Evolution) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make medium-resolution slitless spectroscopy snapshot images of the planetary nebulae LMC-SMP-18 located in the Large Magellanic Cloud to study the parallel evolution of the nebulae and its central star. STIS MCE-1 reset at 222/035109Z while the low voltage was on and while outside any SAA interval. ROP NS-12 was executed at 222/0517Z to reset the STIS flight software error counter. MAMA-1 was recovered via normal SMS commanding at 222/0958Z, the next time the high voltage was turned on. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
