HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2437 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/16/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/17/99 Daily Status Report as of 229/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 8442 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 8 Standard Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 8 standard dark calibration observations. This dark calibration program obtains dark frames every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed FGS 8292 (Calibrating the Mass-Luminosity Relation at the End of the Main Sequence) The Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS1R) was used to make astrometric observations of the star GJ1081 and other nearby reference stars. This is part of a study to calibrate the mass-luminosity relation for stars less massive than 0.2 Msun, with special emphasis on objects near the stellar/brown dwarf border. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.4 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 7495 (Survey of Gravitational Lenses as Cosmological Tools) The WF/PC-2 was used to make survey observations of object FBQ1633+31 by obtaining deep, high-resolution images in the optical and near IR in order to see if it is gravitationally lensed and could be used as a cosmological tool. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. During the second iteration of this proposal, the loss of lock described in 2.1 and HSTAR 7218 occurred, affecting one observation. Otherwise, the observations were completed as scheduled, and no further anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed STIS/CCD 8202 (Bright Quasar Close Lensing Search) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of HCLQ1530+3 as part of a second generation survey to search for bright lensing quasars. With the restored PSF, new images will be considerably more sensitive to the presence of both close separation and faint lens components, and because STIS reaches two magnitudes fainter the PC, the new snapshot images will have much greater dynamic range. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 8181 (Resolving Sirius-like Binaries) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the star 63ERI in order to try and resolve these Sirius-like binary star systems. Subsequent determinations of the visual orbits of the resolved binaries with the HST will provide dynamical measurements of the white-dwarf masses. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed STIS/CCD/MA2 8225 (Absorption and Obscuration in Radio-Loud Quasars) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to make observations of the radio-loud quasar MRCO450-22. The role of associated absorption systems and dust obscuration close to the central engines of AGN is not understood. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed STIS/MA1 7769 (Spectro Imaging of the Jovian Aurora) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make spectrographic images of the aurora of the planet Jupiter. Observations were also made of its moon Europa. The primary interest is the diagnostic of the Lyman-alpha emission in several particular regions of the Jovian auroral region, together with records of the H-2 Lyman and Werner emission which is necessary for its interpretation. The observations were completed as planned and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed Two Sets of STIS/MA1 8426 (Cycle 8 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make a routine Cycle-8 MAMA dark noise calibration measurement. This proposal will provide the primary means of checking on the health of the MAMA detectors. This is done through frequent monitoring of the background count rate. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6671 (Deep V, I Photometry for 20 M31 Globular Clusters) The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep photometry observations (V=27.5) of the globular cluster M-31- G87 which is located in the Andromeda Galaxy (a.k.a., M-31). During this proposal, the loss of lock described in 2.1 and HSTAR 7218 occurred, affecting one observation. Otherwise, the observations were executed as planned, and no further problems were reported. 1.14 Completed STIS/CCD 7912 (STIS Parallel Archive Proposal - Nearby Galaxies - Imaging and Spectroscopy) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make parallel observations of nearby galaxies. This survey will be useful to study the star formation histories, chemical evolution, and distances to these galaxies. These data will be placed immediately into the Hubble Data Archive. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.15 Completed STIS/CCD 8080 (STIS Spectroscopic CCD Flatfielding -- Revised) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make CCD flat fielding calibration observations in the spectroscopic mode. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 8345 (Multipolar Bubbles and Jets in Very Low Excitation Planetary Nebulae - A WF/PC-2 H-Alpha Imaging Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make H-Alpha observations of the very low excitation planetary nebula PK223-04D1 in order to study its multipolar bubbles and jets. Comparison of the morphology of this young PNe sample with more evolved PNe populations will set new constraints on models for the production of jet-like outflows and nebular evolution.
