HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2440 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/19/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/20/99 Daily Status Report as of 232/0000Z 1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 8345 (Multipolar Bubbles and Jets in Very Low Excitation Planetary Nebulae - A WF/PC-2 H-Alpha Imaging Survey) The WF/PC-2 was used to make H-Alpha observations of the very low excitation planetary nebula PK107-13D1 in order to study its multipolar bubbles and jets. Comparison of the morphology of this young PNe sample with more evolved PNe populations will set new constraints on models for the production of jet-like outflows and nebular evolution. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of FGS 8309 (A Link Between Massive Binary Stars and Non-thermal Radio Emission) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations of the massive Wolf-Rayet binary stars WR15 and WR16 and several nearby reference stars. Non-thermal radio emission in Wolf-Rayet stars is explained in terms of synchrotron emission from shocks in the stellar wind. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.5 Completed Four Sets of STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make low galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed STIS/CCD 8470 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition VI proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6788 (The Main Sequence Luminosity Function of Palomar 5) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Palomar5 in order to study its main sequence luminosity function. Palomar5 appears to represent an extreme in the dynamical evolution of globular clusters. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 7306 (Halo Microlens Source Systems and their Underlying Stellar Backgrounds) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain medium-deep broadband images of STAR-0517 for microlensing events, plus one additional star, to determine a} which star was actually lensed, b} the amount of crowding in our ground-based frames, c} if the stars are normal in the CMD, and d} if they lie preferentially at the back of the LMC. The proposal completed with no reported problems. 1.10 Completed STIS/CCD 8202 (Bright Quasar Close Lensing Search) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of HCLQ1346-0 as part of a second generation survey to search for bright lensing quasars. With the restored PSF, new images will be considerably more sensitive to the presence of both close separation and faint lens components, and because STIS reaches two magnitudes fainter the PC, the new snapshot images will have much greater dynamic range. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6752 (Global Mapping of the Opposition Surge on the Galilean Satellites) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Jupiter’s moons Ganyemede, Io, Europa and Callisto. This is to construct ~200 km resolution global maps of the opposition brightness surge for each of the four Galilean satellites to support and complement Galileo mission science investigations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 8251 (The Second-Parameter Effect in Metal- Rich, Globular Clusters: A Snapshot Study of NGC 6441) The WF/PC-2 was used to observe the newly-discovered hot horizontal branch (HB) populations in the metal-rich globular cluster (GCs) NGC-6441 providing an unique opportunity for unraveling the second-parameter effect. While it has long been known that at least one parameter besides the metallicity, Fe/H, determines the HB morphology of GCs, our ignorance as to the nature of this second parameter {or parameters} has been a major stumbling block in understanding the formation history and age of the GC system. The proposal completed nominally with no reported problems. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 8134 (Is the IMF Universal at Low Stellar Masses?) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the cluster NGC-2214 (a.k.a., LMC cluster R-136). Only the HST can provide the resolution and limiting magnitude required to reach the low-mass end of the IMF at extragalactic distances. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.14 Completed STIS/CCD 7912 (STIS Parallel Archive Proposal - Nearby Galaxies - Imaging and Spectroscopy) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make parallel observations of nearby galaxies. This survey will be useful to study the star formation histories, chemical evolution, and distances to these galaxies. These data will be placed immediately into the Hubble Data Archive.
