HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2449 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 09/01/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 09/02/99 Daily Status Report as of 245/0000Z OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 8443 (WF/PC-2 Cycle-8 Supplemental Darks pt1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 8263 (Snapshots of Sub-mJy Starburst Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the starbursting galaxy Gal-011043. Some of the most ambitious and widely cited extragalactic observations in recent years have been the constraints made on the star formation history of the Universe. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6631 (Imaging a Cluster of Galaxies at Redshift 2.38) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galactic cluster Gal-Clus-2073 which is located at a distance of z = 2.38. This is a sub-set of about four galaxies within the cluster that forms a very compact {< 100 kpc} galaxy group and may be merging to form a giant elliptical galaxy. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of STIS/MA1 8426 (Cycle 8 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make a routine Cycle-8 MAMA dark noise calibration measurement. This proposal will provide the primary means of checking on the health of the MAMA detectors. This is done through frequent monitoring of the background count rate. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed Five Sets of STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make both low and high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6657 (Resolving the Shocks in Powerful Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the powerful radio galaxy PK2250-41 in order to try to find the optical counterpart of its jets. It is clear that jet/cloud interactions play an important role in defining the morphology, kinematics and ionization of the extended gas in active galaxies, we are still far from understanding the physical mechanisms involved. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 8453 (Cycle 8 Polarization) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the standard source star G191B2B in order to verify the stability of the instrument’s polarization calibration. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 7281 (Snapshot Survey of the B2 Sample of Radio Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the B2 sample radio galaxy B2+0149+35. This program is aimed to answer the following key questions: How common are extended nuclear disks? What is their orientation and morphology? How common are optical jets? The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 8192 (A Snapshot Survey of Probable Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a snapshot survey images of a probable nearby galaxy KK083. The census of galaxies in the Local Volume of space is very incomplete, particularly at the faint end. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/MA2 7410 (Deep UV Imaging of the Hubble Deep Field) The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of Hubble Deep Field HDF-STIS-P. The observations will extend the searches for Lyman break galaxies to B~ 29, two magnitudes fainter than possible with the existing HDF data and more than four magnitudes fainter than the current limit of ground-based spectroscopy. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions: 12 Successful: 12 Scheduled Re-acquisitions: 4 Successful: 4 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled: 18 Successful: 18 2.3 Operations Notes: The flight operations team remains in the STOCC using CCS “A” string, except for the period 244/1830Z to 244/2043Z when CCS “B” string was utilized. Using ROP SR-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared twice. The NICMOSSS FPA temperature sensor for detector 1 was enabled at 244/1752Z. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
