HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2471 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/04/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 10/05/99 Daily Status Report as of 278/0000Z 1.0 OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8441 (WF/PC-2 Decontaminations and Associated Observations Pt. 1/2) The WF/PC-2 was used to make its monthly decontamination operations. Observations were made of standard source GRW+70D582. Also included are instrument monitors tied to decons: photometric stability check, focus monitor, pre- and post-decon internals {bias, internal flats, k-spots, and darks}, and ultraviolet throughput checks. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.3 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 8099 (Imaging the Circumstellar Environments of the Cool Hypergiants) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the curcumstellar environment around the cool, hypergiant, variable star S-Per. The cool hypergiants are evolved massive stars that lie just below the empirical upper luminosity boundary in the HR Diagram. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8442 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 8 Standard Darks) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 8 standard dark calibration observations. This dark calibration program obtains dark frames every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed FGS 8309 (A Link Between Massive Binary Stars and Non-thermal Radio Emission) The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations of the massive Wolf-Rayet binary star WR48 and several nearby reference stars. Non-thermal radio emission in Wolf-Rayet stars is explained in terms of synchrotron emission from shocks in the stellar wind. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.7 Completed Two Sets of STIS/MA1 8426 (Cycle 8 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make a routine Cycle-8 MAMA dark noise calibration measurement. This proposal will provide the primary means of checking on the health of the MAMA detectors. This is done through frequent monitoring of the background count rate. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.8 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8132 (The Nature of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be Star Winds) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of LKH Alpha-2. The forbidden line emission, of what are probably the youngest classical T Tauri stars and Herbig Ae/Be stars, is often characterized by two radial velocity components. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 8443 (WF/PC-2 Cycle-8 Supplemental Darks pt1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 8436 (POMS Test Proposal: WFII Backup Parallel Archive Proposal II) The WF/PC-2 was used to make archive observations parallel to the prime science observations as part of a POMS test proposal. This is a POMS test proposal designed to simulate scientific plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 8192 (A Snapshot Survey of Probable Nearby Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a snapshot survey images of a probable nearby galaxy KK242. The census of galaxies in the Local Volume of space is very incomplete, particularly at the faint end. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted 1.13 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted parallel Condition V proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 8515 (WF/PC-2 Pre-SM3A UV Baseline Observations) The WF/PC-2 was used to make far-ultraviolet observations of the CVZ target GD4481 as part of the WF/PC-2 pre-SM3A UV baseline calibration observations. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 8163 (Trapezium Systems and Stellar Jets in 30-Doradus) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the 30-Doradus system (both the North and South sections). 30-Doradus is the nearest and best resolved extragalactic starbursting region. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions: 10 Successful: 10 The acquisition at 278/082343Z defaulted to fine lock backup on FGS-2 only when the scan step limit was exceeded on FGS-3. HSTAR 7295 was written. STIS proposal 8224, occurring during the period of the next report, may have been affected. Scheduled Re-acquisitions: 6 Successful: 6 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled: 23 Successful: 23 2.3 Operations Notes: Using ROP SR-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared three times. Transmissions to POPDS have been resumed, using the “old” PDB, 53-C. At 278/002134Z, a STIS status buffer message was received indicating that there had been a “boot invalid error number”. According to flight software documentation, this message should never be received in “operate” mode, and that, should it be received then, STIS should enter the “suspend” state. STIS, however, continued in the “operate” state with no apparent ill effects. HSTAR 7294 was written. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /DMH
