HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2483 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/20/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 10/21/99 Daily Status Report as of 294/0000Z 1.0 OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8457 (UV Earthflats) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a ultraviolet Earth flat calibration image. This is to improve the quality of pipeline the ultraviolet flatfields. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 8443 (WF/PC-2 Cycle-8 Supplemental Darks pt1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.4 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.5 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1 7738 (Thermal Pressures of the Local Interstellar Medium) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to make observations of the star HD196867 in order to study the thermal pressure of the local interstellar medium. The thermal pressure of the interstellar medium is a fundamental quantity whose average value and fluctuations tell us much about key physical processes. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.6 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 8252 (Extinction Curves of Distant Galaxies) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the distant galaxy/quasar Q2237+0305 in order to study its extinction. The program will more than double the number of galaxies in which extinction curves have been measured and it will provide the first such measurements far outside the Local Group. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.8 Completed STIS/MA1 8426 (Cycle 8 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make a routine Cycle-8 MAMA dark noise calibration measurement. This proposal will provide the primary means of checking on the health of the MAMA detectors. This is done through frequent monitoring of the background count rate. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.9 Completed Four Sets of STIS/CCD 8549 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS non-scripted parallel proposal continuation III) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a non-scripted POMS Test Proposal. As described in 2.1 and HSTAR 7326, the acquisition for the final iteration of this proposal failed, the take data flag remained down, and one observation was affected. Otherwise, the observations were completed as scheduled, and no further problems were reported. 1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 8163 (Trapezium Systems and Stellar Jets in 30-Doradus) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the 30-Doradus system (both the North and South sections). 30-Doradus is the nearest and best resolved extragalactic starbursting region. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 8059 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-2 Targeted Parallel Archive Proposal) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations in parallel with the prime science observations. The parallel opportunities available with WF/PC-2 in the neighborhood of bright galaxies are treated in a slightly different way from the normal pure parallels. Local group galaxies offer the opportunity for a closer look at young stellar populations. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 8230 (Snapshot Survey of Dynamically Close Galaxy Pairs from z=0.1 to z=0.5) The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of galactic cluster Gal-Clus-2723. This is to obtain snapshot images of a large, well-defined, and dynamically selected sample of close galaxy pairs at moderate redshift. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 8031 (Gaseous Disks in Galactic Nuclei) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the gaseous disk in galactic disk of galaxy NGC-1399. Follow-up long-slit medium resolution STIS spectroscopy along the principle axis of the nuclear gas disk will then be used to map the gas kinematics. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 8216 (T Tauri Star Snapshot Survey II. Completing the CTTs Sample) The WF/PC-2 was to be used to make observations of the T-Tauri class star known as L1642-1 as part of Snapshot Survey II. As described in 2.1 and HSTAR 7326, the acquisition for this proposal failed, the take data flag remained down, and four observations were affected. 1.15 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1 8287 (A Search For Transparent Lines of Sight With Intergalactic He-II Absorption Towards 26 Bright z > 2.9 Quasars) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to make He-II absorption line observations of quasar HE310-605. The aim is to identify more suitable bright objects for detailed studies of intergalactic He-II absorption at a redshift of Z <2.9 and >3.2 . A wavelength calibration observation was also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions: 10 Successful: 9 HSTAR 7326 documents a guide star acquisition failure that occurred at 293/203645Z when the scan step limit was exceeded for FGS-3.
