HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE DAILY REPORT #2499 PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 11/11/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/12/99 Daily Status Report as of 316/0000Z 1.0 OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED: 1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 8409 (STIS CCD Bias Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the bias in the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4, to build up high-S/N superbiases and to track the evolution of hot columns. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8175 (A Survey of Gravitational Lenses as Cosmological Tools III) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the gravitational lens systems RXJ0921+45 and FBQ0951+26. Gravitational lenses are powerful tools for studying cosmology, galactic structure, and galaxy evolution. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.3 Completed STIS/CCD 8408 (STIS CCD Dark Monitor C8) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a CCD bias calibration observation. This is to monitor the darks for the STIS CCD. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 1.4 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 8443 (WF/PC-2 Cycle-8 Supplemental Darks pt1/3) The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain three dark frames every day to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.5 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8549 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS Non-scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation III) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a non-scripted POMS Test Proposal. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported. 1.6 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 8545 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS non-scripted parallel proposal continuation VI) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make low galactic latitude, non-scripted parallel observations as part of a POMS test proposal. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 8444 (WF/PC-2 CYCLE-8 Internal Monitor) The WF/PC-2 was used to make a bias, and an internal flat, observation as part of a Cycle-8 monitoring program to monitor the health of the cameras. A variety of internal exposures are obtained in order to provide a monitor of the integrity of the CCD camera electronics in both bays {gain 7 and gain 15}, a test for quantum efficiency in the CCDs, and a monitor for possible buildup of contaminants on the CCD windows. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.8 Completed WF/PC-2/STIS/CCD 8324 (The Structure and Kinematics of Irradiated Disks and Associated High Velocity Features in Orion) Both the WF/PC-2 and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) were used to make observations of high velocity feature M-42 located within the Orion Nebula. The STIS provides us with a unique opportunity to study the early evolution of proto-planetary disks and their chances of survival in the harsh irradiated environments of OB class associations where most stars form. A wavelength calibration observation was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.9 Completed STIS/CCD 8236 (Black Holes and Gas Disks in a Complete Sample of Radio-Loud Ellipticals - II: Kinematics) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make observations of the radio-loud elliptical galaxy UGC-01841. From these observations we will measure the black hole masses, determine the nature, kinematics, and structure of the central gas disks and obtain a modeled upper limit to their mass accretion rates. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation) The WF//PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. 1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 8436 (POMS Test Proposal: WFII Backup Parallel Archive Proposal II) The WF/PC-2 was used to make archive observations parallel to the prime science observations as part of a POMS test proposal. This is a POMS test proposal designed to simulate scientific plans. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported. 1.12 Completed STIS/CCD/MA1/MA2 8108 (Search for the Origin of Supersonic Turbulence Observed in the Upper Equatorial Atmosphere of JupiterP The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD/MA1/MA2) was used to observe Jupiter, which like the Sun, sustains a coronal region at the top of its atmosphere. H-Ly-alpha spectra measured by GHRS in the Jovian Ly-alpha bulge region, evidenced a non thermal line broadening, implying supersonic atomic motions and variability on a time scale of about one minute. The primary acquisition for this seven-and-one-half-hour proposal failed, as described in 2.1 and HSTAR 7354, affecting two observations. The subsequent re-acquisitions, however, were successful after the uplink of an attitude reference update. There were no further reported problems. 1.13 Completed STIS/MA2 8426 (Cycle 8 MAMA Dark Measurements) The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA2) was used to make a routine Cycle-8 MAMA dark noise calibration measurement. This proposal will provide the primary means of checking on the health of the MAMA detectors. This is done through frequent monitoring of the background count rate. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported. 1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 8272 (The Horizontal Branches of the M31 Dwarf Spheroidal Companions And V & VI) The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of stars in the horizontal branches of the M-31 dwarf spheroidal companions galaxies Andromeda V & VI. These dwarf spheroidal galactic companions show a surprising diversity in the epochs of their major star formation episodes, extending from ~15 Gyr to ~3 Gyr. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. 2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY: 2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions: Scheduled Acquisitions: 2 Successful: 1 The acquisition at 315/125149Z failed when the attitude error was greater than the FGS-3 search radius. (see FHST failure history in 2.3) The proposal described in 1.12 was affected. Scheduled Re-acquisitions: 13 Successful: 13 2.2 FHST Updates: Scheduled: 7 Successful: 4 Per HSTAR 7351, the full maneuver updates at 315/123318Z and at 315/123603Z failed completely due to FHST-3. The subsequent roll delay update at 315/124322Z also failed due to FHST-3 (HSTAR 7352), as well as the following acquisition (see HSTAR 7354 and 2.1). The NICMOS FPA temperature sensor for detector 2 was enabled at 316/0601Z. 2.3 Operations Notes: Using ROP SR-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared twice. Due to the acquisition problem detailed in 2.1, it was necessary to reset the STIS flight software error counter at 315/1323Z as directed in ROP NS-12. 3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations. /CAW
