******************************************************************************* Instructions for ftp-submission of postscript [.ps] or PDF [.pdf] files. Last updated: June 8, 1999. ******************************************************************************* If you choose to do your POSTSCRIPT/PDF SUBMISSION via ftp, then please follow these instructions. 1. Set the COVERPART KEYWORD "\formattedsubmission{FTP}" in your proposal. 2. ftp to ftp-presto.stsci.edu, login as anonymous, give your complete email address as password, cd to "upload", put your PostScript or PDF file there, and logout again with "bye". Example: * ftp ftp-presto.stsci.edu Connected to CLOTHO.STSCI.EDU. 220 clotho.stsci.edu FTP server (Version wu-2.4(13) ready. * Name (ftp-presto.stsci.edu:blacker): anonymous 331 Guest login ok, send your complete e-mail address as password. * Password: blacker@stsci.edu [password will not be echoed] 230 Guest login ok, access restrictions apply. * ftp> cd upload 250 CWD command successful. * ftp> put bblacker_1.ps [regarding name, see note below] 200 PORT command successful. 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for bblacker_1.ps. 226 Transfer complete. local: bblacker_1.ps remote: bblacker_1.ps 22 bytes sent in 0.0012 seconds (17 Kbytes/s) * ftp> bye 221 Goodbye. > [* denotes a line where you enter either response or command] 3. Email the LaTeX coverpage. If you have set \formattedsubmission{FTP} on the coverpage we will then go and retrieve your PostScript or PDF file. 4. You will receive an acknowledgement (generally within two days) that your PostScript or PDF file has successfully printed. The submission is not considered complete until such an acknowledgement has been sent. If you fail to receive an acknowledgement within two days, then please contact the Science Programs Selection Office (see contact address below). NOTES: ------ i) The data area where you put your file is a high security area. Hence you will neither be able to list the contents of the directory, nor to copy any file from there even if you know its name. Hence, do not worry that you cannot see your file there; if "ftp" has answered "transfer complete" then your file has arrived safely. ii) Name of your file. To make it possible for us to locate your file, please adopt the following naming convention for your file. The filename should be: 'first name initial' 'last name' '_' 'identifier' '.ps' 'identifier' can be any string. It is just meant to make the filename unique in case you have more than one proposal or in case of transfer errors. Say your name is Isaac Newton, say this is your third Cycle 9 proposal so you choose 'No3' as identifier. Your filename is then: inewton_No3.ps Anticipated Problems: --------------------- a. You forget to set the correct COVERPAGE KEYWORD. FIX: The "formattedsubmission{}" KEYWORD is there to make it possible for us to locate your formatted proposal, and match it up with the coverpage. If you find that you by mistake had set the wrong KEYWORD, please contact the Science Programs Selection Office (see contact address below) and supply the information needed (PI name and proposal title) to link your coverpage to your proposal. b. The ftp link goes down in the middle of a transmission, you are not sure the transfer was complete. You cannot check if it was, because the high security ftp area will not allow you to do that. FIX: Change the identifier part of your filename ONLY. Say by incrementing a counter. In the example above you could choose: inewton_No3.ps ---> inewton_No4.ps or inewton_No3.ps ---> inewton_No3a.ps if you do not want to change the number specification. Then ftp it again.
