In this Newsletter we provide some updates of interest to
COS and STIS users who will be drafting and submitting Phase 2
HST programs over the next weeks:

New Mandatory Keyword for COS Observations Describing
whether Targets are Point Sources or Extended
For Cycle 23 and beyond, COS observers are required to define their targets as EXTENDED = "YES" or "NO" at the target description level. -------------------------------------------------------------- Using the TIME-TAG mode with STIS/MAMA Observations For the STIS/MAMA detectors, the default operating mode is the ACCUM mode that provides a time-integrated image or spectrum of the target of interest. By contrast, the TIME-TAG mode records the position and arrival time of each photon on the detector. Opting for TIME-TAG mode observations with the STIS/MAMA has several advantages and we encourage all PIs of Cycle 23 programs using STIS/MAMA configurations to use the TIME-TAG mode when possible. This mode opens the time-domain window and further increases the legacy value of such observations at little or no extra cost. +----------------------------------------------------------+ | Need help? +----------------------------------------------------------+ | To subscribe or unsubscribe to the STAN, send a message | to with a blank subject line and | only the following in the body: [un]subscribe cos_news | or [un]subscribe stis_news. +----------------------------------------------------------+ | The Space Telescope Science Institute is operated by the | Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, | Inc., under NASA contract NAS5-26555. +----------------------------------------------------------+
