How to Diagnose and Fix Communication Problems with APT

Depending on your institution's computer security measures (firewalls, blocked ports, etc.), you may initially have trouble while using APT. This could include:

• Not seeing some of the documentation which is hosted here.
• Not being able to retrieve investigator addresses from our database.
• Not being able to submit the proposal.

In the first two cycles some people had problems writing or submitting proposals due to firewalls or other computer security measures at their home institution. APT was modified for Cycle 14 so that fewer internet communication protocols are used (only JAVA RMI and HTTP) and it is now possible to force only HTTP to be used.

People who had problems in the past have confirmed that while they still had a problem, they could fix the problem with the new options and were able to effectively connect to the Institute.

Since it would be best to discover any communication problems well before the Phase I deadline, here are the steps to diagnose and fix communication problems. You or your system administrator can run this early on if you have any concerns about whether your institution's security measures might interfere with APT.
