STIS Calibration Outsourcing Opportunities
We advertise a potential list of projects that are candidates for Cycle 10
calibration outsourcing proposals that could be submitted in response to
the Cycle 10 call for proposals. This list is not meant to be complete and
no guarantee of approval by the TAC is intended or implied. Note that some
of these are essentially archival proposals: the data have already been
acquired, or they will be acquired in a Cycle 9 calibration program, and one
could submit a proposal to analyze these data and create appropriate reference
files and documentation.
Ideas Requiring Observing Proposals
-
Obtain Line Spread Functions for the 52x0.1 and 52x0.2 slits
using external objects
-
Current LSFs for these apertures are based on observations of
an extended source through the 52X0.05 slit convolved with
model PSFs.
-
Model CCD ghosts (window reflections) at Y=900
-
We are implementing new aperture definitions that will permit
observations of compact objects (e.g., galactic nuclei)
centered at row 900 on the CCD rather than the center.
This will ameliorate losses due to decreasing charge transfer
efficiency in the CCD. The pattern of reflections at this
location will be different. A proposal to observe and
analyze this effect would be useful.
-
Imaging PSF across the field of view, as a function of spectral type
-
We have observed a grid of stars of different spectral types
at the center of the field of view for the purpose of
characterizing the STIS PSF. Some data over a narrow range
of colors from observations of star clusters exists, but
blue spectral types are lacking. See proposals 8422 and 8416.
- Ideas using Existing or Planned Calibration Data
-
Coronographic Wedge PSF Characterization
-
Data that could be used for this purpose are being obtained
in the Cycle 8 calibration proposal 8419, and in the Cycle 9
proposal 8842. Observations of stars spanning a range of
colors are being obtained at two wedge locations.
-
Model CCD window ghosts for G750M spectra
-
Data that could be used for this purpose are being obtained
in the Cycle 9 calibration proposal 8852.
-
Characterize Spectroscopic PSFs for the 52x0.2, 52x0.2F1 & 52x0.2F2
slits at 10^-6 of peak flux
-
Data that could be used for this purpose are being obtained
in the Cycle 9 calibration proposal 8844.
