WF/PC-1 Deltaflat Corrections

Abstract excerpted from the report:
Observations taken after a decontamination procedure and processed with flatfield reference files created from data obtained prior to that decontamination will require a deltaflat correction. A deltaflat can also be used to reduce, although not eliminate, the effects of the 'measles' contamination. Deltaflats, ratios of pre- and post-decontamination internal calibration lamp exposures (INTFLATS), are currently being generated and installed into the Deltaflat Library which has been established in the Calibration Data Base (CDB). This report presents a snapshot of the contents of this library as well as lists of useful INTFLATs from which the user may wish to generate additional deltaflats. This memo is updated on STEIS as future additions are made to the library.
1. Introduction:
The structure of WF/PC-1 flatfields is changed to some degree by any decontamination (decon) procedure, normally executed to improve blue performance, reduce the internal scattered light, temporarily restore UV transmission, and clear up other contamination features. Decons must be performed 1) after every WF/PC or HST safemode entry which turns off the WF/PC Thermal Electric Coolers (TECs) and 2) after about 9 months of continuous cold operation. During 1992 and 1993, the following decons were performed:
Feb 3 (1992.034) and Feb 4 (1992.035)
Mar 3 (1992.063) and Mar 8 (1992.068)
Aug 7 (1992.220)
Aug 2 (1993.214)
Flatfield reference files used in the pipeline calibration are generated from sets of EARTHCALs (observations of the bright Earth). The current baseline flatfield reference files were produced from data taken between August 1991 and January 1992; there were no decons during this period. The acquisition of enough properly exposed EARTHCALs to create a new set of flatfields requires a great deal of observing time due to the large variability in the Earth's albedo. Therefore, two complete flatfield calibrations were planned, the first was carried out once during Science Verification (SV) and early Cycle 1, and the second will be obtained during the second half of Cycle 2 through Cycle 3. The frequency of decons, however, is much greater and their occurances unpredictable. In the absence of a flatfield reference file of the same epoch (or time period between decons) as the observation, ratios of INTFLATs, while not directly useful as a flat calibration, can be used to update the existing flatfield.
A deltaflat is defined as the ratio of an INTFLAT of the same epoch as the flatfield calibration file (here, the time period for the IDT SV flatfield files: July 1991 through January 1992) divided by an INTFLAT taken close in time and wavelength to the science observation to be corrected. To apply the correction, the calibrated pipeline image is multiplied by the appropriate deltaflat: F = C*Delta where F is the final image, C is the calibrated pipeline product image which has had the flatfield reference file applied, and the deltaflat consists of the ratio of an INTFLAT or set of INTFLATs from the reference file epoch (I Base), and an INTFLAT from the observation's epoch (I Obs).
The INTFLATs are taken by illuminating the backside of one of the two shutter blades (A or B) with internal lamps. Due to variations in the shutter blade reflectivities, the proper calculation of a deltaflat also requires that the same blade be used for both I Base and I Obs. Since the flatfields and measles features have been found to depend on wavelength, the deltaflat (or INTFLATs) closest in filter to the observation will provide the best possible correction. Note that prior to the development of the persistent measles, regular INTFLATs were being obtained for a relatively small number of filters. Hence, INTFLATs for the baseline epoch, and thus the resulting deltaflats, are available for only a small number of filters. However, since then, the deltaflat proposals have been greatly expanded to obtain INTFLATs in nearly 20 filters in each camera (see Section 4). This will allow the correction of future flatfields (from Cycle 2/3) to the prior observations.
2. Average Deltaflats:
Since the CCD flatfields and the measles features on the INTFLATs have been shown to be stable during the time period between Mar. 08, 1992 and Aug. 07, 1992 (see WF/PC-1 Instrument Report 92-4), a set of "average" deltatflats were generated for that time period. For each filter, all individual deltaflats from that time period were combined to form a single deltaflat which is then appropriate for correcting an image taken during Mar.-Aug. 1992 but flatfielded with an SV flatfield which dates from July 1991 to January 1992. Table 1-A lists the rootnames of the average deltaflats available for the given camera/filter combinations. The full filenames to request from USB are the rootname plus '.r8h' for the deltaflat header and rootname plus '.r8d' for the deltaflat binary data file; similarly, rootname plus '.b8h' and '.b8d' are the names for the associated data quality file. Table 1-B lists the rootnames of the average deltaflats available for data taken since August 07, 1992 and flatfielded with an SV flatfield. Table 1-C lists the rootnames of deltaflats available for data taken since August 02, 1993 (these were generated from the standard baseline intflat(s) divided by the minimum of at least 2 post-August 02, 1993 decon intflats).

3. Individual Deltaflats
After first recalibrating the raw INTFLATs with the most recent CALWFP software and calibration reference file set, and normalizing by the exposure times, the individual deltaflats were generated by dividing a PRE-decon INTFLAT (or an average of several if available) by a POST-decon INTFLAT. Due to variations in shutter blade reflectivities, the pre- and post-decon INTFLATs used to produce a given deltaflat were taken with the same blade in place. Note that these individual deltaflats are necessarily formed from single images (Section 4 lists INTFLATs available), and hence contain cosmic rays. Depending upon the exposure time, the individual deltaflats may contain several dozen pixels where cosmic rays cause errors in excess of +/- 30 percent. Users may wish to remove these cosmic rays before applying the deltaflat. One approach which appears effective is to eliminate pixels in the deltaflat which deviate by more than about 7% from the median of the surrounding 4x4 pixel region. This uses the assumption that most features in the deltaflats arise from the camera windows which are out of focus, whereas cosmic ray events involve only one or two pixels. In general, it will be preferable to use an 'average' deltaflat when available (Section 2), where cosmic rays have been eliminated during the averaging process. Table 2 summarizes the current contents of the Deltaflat Library that has been established in the STSCI Calibration Database (CDB). Note that the 'USE DATE' given reflects the observation date of the POST-decon INTFLAT which was used in the ratio; the baseline INTFLATs used in all of these deltaflats are from the Dec. 1991/Jan. 1992 epoch. Generally, a deltaflat closest in time and wavelength to the science observation should be used. Observers may obtain copies of these datasets from the STScI User Support Branch (USB) following the same procedures used for requesting calibration data. The full deltaflat name is the rootname with extension '.r8h' for the ASCII header and '.r8d' for the binary data file; the data quality file extensions are '.b8h' and '.b8d'.

4. Internal Flatfield Programs:
For those users wishing to generate their own deltaflats, this report includes an inventory of useful internal flats from the deltaflat proposals (2876, 4089, 4091, 4713, and 4714). There are other calibration proposals which obtain INTFLATs as part of their program - usually in F439W, F555W, and/or F785LP - but since these three filters are already covered by the deltaflat proposals and the persistent measles appear relatively stable over time, the INTFLATs from those proposals (#3301, 3172, 4109, and 4140) are not included in this memo. Table 3 summarizes the past and present proposals involving INTFLATs, camera/filters used, and frequency with which the data is obtained; those proposals marked with an '*' are the deltaflat proposals. Observers wishing more information on observations from the programs not included in this memo may contact the authors.

Filenames consist of rootname with .c0h and with .c0d extensions for calibrated INTFLATs (extensions are .d0h and .d0d for uncalibrated files). Note: EXPTIME keyword for INTFLATs longer than 80 sec, taken after Feb 10, 1992 and before August 17, 1992, may be incorrect in the d0h and c0h files; the user is advised to use the EXPTIME as given in the appendix tables or alternatively, refer to the CMD_EXP keyword in the shh files.
