Inflation and Dark Energy: Is There a Connection?
Scott Watson (University of Michigan)
We now have convincing evidence that both today and in the very early universe, the cosmic
expansion went through a period of acceleration. A natural question arises: Are these periods of
acceleration connected? I will briefly review past attempts to address this question, as well as more
recent attempts motivated by the string landscape. In particular, I will discuss a crucial theoretical
difficulty that arises in constructing such models, due to the vast range of energy and length scales
involved. I will also discuss the possible experimental signatures that may arise if such models can be realized.
