The Youth for Astronomy and Engineering (YAE) is a program at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) for youth interested in astronomy and engineering as a career. The YAE provides opportunities for its participants to be exposed to activities and experiences that are representative of the work done by individuals in astronomical and engineering field. The Youth for Astronomy program provides a supportive environment that encourages diversity in the astronomical and engineering community by increasing awareness to young women, minorities, and those with special needs. YAE is an expansion of the Women Science Forum which was founded in 1991 by Dr. Laura Danly at the Space Telescope Science Institute. Over the years this program has grown due to the commitment of staff, parents, teachers, students as well as funding partners. 2008 EventsThe following Youth for Astronomy and Engineering events are currently scheduled for 2008: SAVE THE DATE! LATE SPRING 2008 • THE YOUNG WOMEN'S SCIENCE
FORUM Please join us for a day of adventure. This includes several astronomy related or engineering related hands-on activity and science colloquium. You will also have a chance to observe the sun through the Morris W. Offit Telescope, an f/8 Cassegrain telescope, which is the major observing instrument in Maryland Space Grant Observatory. The telescope has, as its major optical element and a 20"-diameter (that is, half- meter diameter) parabolic mirror. This day's event is geared for middle school and high school students. In Fall 2008, we will be hosting the Parent and Daughter Evening Under the Stars and the Parent and Son Evening Under the Stars.
