The Youth for Astronomy and Engineering program is an expansion of the Women Science Forum which was founded in 1991 by Dr. Laura Danly at the Space Telescope Science Institute. STScI supported the Womens Science Forum for many years, and the forum has grown in popularity over the years and is now well known by mathematics and science teachers located in the mid-Atlantic region.
Youth for Astronomy and Engineering is open to students from Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, and students from as far away as California have attended. While here they have shared their career dreams, asked questions of leading scientists and engineers, and taken part in hands-on activities to explore opportunities in various career disciplines.
Develop and encourage a supportive environment that will heighten diversity in the astronomical community by increasing awareness to young women, minorities and those with special needs of career opportunities in the astronomical field by creating Institute programs that will include monthly forums, shadowing, mentoring and special events.
