About the Youth for Astronomy and Engineering Program

The Youth for Astronomy and Engineering program is an expansion of the Women's Science Forum, which was founded in 1991 by Dr. Laura Danly at the Space Telescope Science Institute. STScI supported the Women's Science Forum for many years. The forum has grown in popularity, and is now well known by mathematics and science teachers throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

Youth for Astronomy and Engineering (YAE) is a program at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), in the Office of Public Outreach, for youth interested in astronomy and engineering as a career. The YAE Program provides opportunities for youth in the Maryland community to be exposed to activities and experiences that are representative of the work done by individuals in the astronomical and engineering fields. YAE provides a supportive environment that encourages diversity in the astronomical and engineering profession by increasing awareness to young men and women, minorities, and those with special needs.

Mission Statement

Develop and encourage a supportive environment that will heighten diversity in the astronomical community by increasing awareness of career opportunities in the astronomical field to young women, minorities and those with special needs by creating Institute programs that will include monthly forums, shadowing, mentoring, and special events.
