Goddard Badges Overview
A Goddard Badge allows unescorted access to Goddard Space Flight Center in
Greenbelt, Maryland,
and may be necessary to attend meetings or conduct research, depending upon
your role at the
Institute.
Temporary badges are periodically reviewed and subject to renewal on a six-
month cycle. Day badges are requested and renewed on an as needed basis,
typically for intermittent or quarterly meetings, and must be requested two to
three days in advance if US citizen or ten if Foreign National. Photo badge
requests are reviewed and approved by Alisa Meizlish (ext. 4580 or
meizlish@stsci.edu) and must be accompanied by written justification from a
manager or division head.
Alisa Meizlish (ext. 4580 or meizlish@stsci.edu) is the badging liaison for all
staff under the STScI umbrella and should be contacted in the event that the
occasion arises for a new badge (or badge renewal). There is a renewal process
in place and badge holders are contacted with instructions on exchanging their
expiring badge after its expiration date.
The requirements for obtaining a Goddard badge differ based on
citizenship.
Because Foreign National badge requests are reviewed by the International
Department at Goddard
Space Flight Center, adequate time (at least 10 business days) is required to
obtain approval.
Please be mindful of this time restriction when preparing for travel to
GSFC. We will contact the foreign national visits coordinator at Goddard to make sure
we are in compliance with the most current procedures.
In the News
Security Updates:
GSFC is moving to Force Protection Condition Bravo (Modified), which is
our response to the
Department of Homeland Security lowering the nation's security posture from
Level Orange to Level
Yellow. As a result, many of the security enhancements have been reduced
commensurate with the
current threat level. The processing of all visitors (including individuals
picking up temporary
badges) will be conducted at the Main Gate.
Vehicle inspections will be curtailed; however, they will continue to be
conducted for on a
random basis.
Employees and visitors will continue to be expected to wear their NASA or
GSFC badge above
the waist at all times while on the Center.
Upcoming Renewals:
Our current cycle covers the period June 30, 2008 - December 31, 2008.
Requests for temporary badges can be made at any time during the cycle, but will
be effective only for 3 months.
Frequently Asked Questions: (list will expand as new questions are
posed.)
Q: I don't usually don't have reason to travel to Goddard and am not
badged, but just learned
that I am to attend a meeting at Goddard tomorrow. Can I get badged that soon?
A:
No; however, with adequate processing time (at least 2 days) no less, a visitor who is a
US Citizen can
be issued a day badge that will grant unescorted access to GSFC for the day in
question. If a badge cannot be issued, he/she will be allowed on site if they make
arrangements to be escorted.
Foreign Nationals:
Once documentation has been verified and entered into the GSFC system, a badge can be issued.
If you are on base less than 180 per year, you will not be issued a long-term badge. If a
Foreign National needs to be on base, please email Alisa Meizlish (meizlish@stsci.edu), and she
will request a temporary badge, good for the duration of your time on base.
Q: What if I need a badge for more than a day but less than six
months?
A: Explain any special circumstances to the badging liaison. In most
cases, and with
adequate processing time, requests for badge with a shorter term can be
arranged.
Q: What contract number do I use on my forms?
A: The contract number for HST is NAS5-26555 and for JWST it is NAS5-
03127. If your time
is split, use the contract number that corresponds with the project to which
most of your time is
charged.
The aforementioned are subject to change without notice and should be
reviewed with the badging
liaison for accuracy.
