Matthew Lallo

Having a love of astronomy from a young age, Matt had no sooner obtained an undergraduate degree in Astrophysics when he jumped at the chance to come to the Space Telescope Science Institute during the exciting time of the late '80s when Hubble was shiny and still on the ground, poised to revolutionize our understanding of the universe. Since those days, Matt has played a part in many facets of Hubble's long and storied life, studied engineering at Johns Hopkins University, managed a group responsible for Hubble User Support, and currently serves as a Mission Systems Scientist for Hubble's complement and successor, the James Webb Space Telescope.

Mission Systems Scientist
(Current Position)
Addresses observatory-level performance relating to astrometry and pointing, focal-plane and alignments, image quality, and anomaly investigation for both the Hubble & James Webb Space Telescope missions.

Analyst
(1988 Aug - 2001 Oct)
  • Played roles after Hubble'’s 1993, 1997, and 1999 Servicing Missions by coordinating certain SI calibration activities, and by evaluating in real time, performance during SMOV.
  • Performed trade studies of the Next Generation Space Telescope “Yardstick” design. Modeled straylight and scattering to determine backgrounds. Supported the implemention of this work into the JWST Mission Simulator.
  • Designed successful HST calibration proposals to determine accurate SI locations in the focal plane.
  • Responsible for the calibration database relating to the FOV, and the aperture models associated with each instrument.
  • Responsible for HST focus assessments and mirror moves. Led an interdivisional study on focus behavior and dependencies. Interfaced with HST Project to understand, monitor, and maintain HST in best focus.
  • Resolved pointing anomalies with the spacecraft and assessed pointing performance. Provided HST Guest Observers special analyses of pointing issues with their observations.
  • Received the 1997 STScI Achievement Award for contributions to the second Servicing Mission orbital verification.
  • Tested and certified GHRS pipeline.

Technical Supervisor & HST WBS Team Lead
2002 Aug - 2004 March
Deputy Lead of the Technical Services branch. Provided personnel and technical management for a group of 12 staff. Provided technical leadership and “hands-on” contributions toward the group’s mission of IT support of STScI. Developed strategic goals, mentored staff, and negotiated resources between the other branches. Managed and oversaw all work charged to “HST User Documentation”. Coordinated and assigned tasks, reported and communicated to the Mission and Divisions.

IT Team Lead
2001 Oct - 2002 Aug
Led a Hubble Division group whose mission was the flexible and dynamic dissemination of information to the Hubble user and internal staff via the Hubble web portal and other forms of documentation products and processes. Led and defined strategic and technical goals for IT support of the Hubble Mission.

The Telescopes Group houses a wide range of expertise in the HST & JWST observatories, possessing knowledge of the instruments, optical systems, spacecraft engineering, pointing control systems, and scientific objectives...More...
