The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the science and operations center for the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. Its world-class staff carries out investigations in astronomy, astrophysics and engineering.
STScI's High School Research Mentor Program supports active research participation by high school students in science, engineering and computing projects carried out by STScI staff. The STScI program runs during the school year as well as the summer.
Deadline for applications is 2 April 2012. The 2012-2013 program starts after 17 June 2012. This is an unpaid internship.

Goals
- Provide opportunities for very motivated high school students to engage in real science and engineering.
- Encourage students to get an early start in science and engineering.
- Increase student involvement from under-represented populations in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
- Better prepare high school students for college.
- Increase the STScI's involvement in the local community.
- Help our staff learn to work with a diverse workforce.
Eligibility
For consideration in this program, students should meet the following criteria:
- Completed 10th grade or be 16 years of age as of 18 June 2012.
- Attend high school within 50 miles the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, MD.
- Submit a complete application by the deadline.
- If selected as semi-finalist, must participate in a formal interview.
- Must be committed to participate on a full time basis during the Summer (i.e. Monday to Friday for 8 weeks).
- And/or 4-6 hours per week during the Academic Year.

A complete application consists of:
- Student Information.
- Placement Information.
- Complete responses to application questions.
- Parent/Guardian Data and Consent Form.
- Medical Form.
- Teacher Recommendations.
- Official School Transcript. (If chosen as semifinalist, transcripts will be required to be provided before the interview occurs.)
- Current Report Card or Interim Report.
Student Selection Criteria
The students will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Potential to carry out the proposed work.
- Academic excellence.
- Motivation.
- Initiative.
- Capability of working well in a group..
- Essay (no more than 600 words) describing the student's interests and professional goals, what the student expects to achieve by being part of the program.
- Letters of recommendation from teachers and guidance counselor.
- A formal interview.
